For being a mega fight, Cotto-Canelo doesn't change the boxing landscape

Whichever fighter wins, not much will change in the boxing world.

If Canelo wins he will go on to do whatever it is he'd do anyway. How much can an objective fan even rate this win? Cotto is two (three?) divisions north of his best and clearly out of his prime. He obviously has something left to give, but how much? We don't know because he hasn't faced a stiff test Trout, where he was handily beaten. If Cotto loses he'll retire, or fight a few inconsequential retirement fights.

If Cotto wins which I hope for boxing's sake he doesn't, things become awkward. We now have a "middleweight" champ who won't even consider fighting the man at 160. He has beaten a very good but never great looking Alvarez, and will go on to masquerade as champ at 160 for years to come. Canelo would probably move up to 160 and start picking off weaker opposition before facing GGG in 2018.

Forget middleweight. Why doesn't Cotto get a HW strap and start defending it at 156.5? What a legendary MW champ.

Looking forward to this fight but again, it means close to nothing in the grand scheme of things.

True, but it'll give us some insight into Canelos actual skill level. It's been so hard to estimate after getting outclassed by Floyd, barely beat Trout, but can beat up on a lot of the mid level guys. I think we'll know just how good (or bad) Canelo is. FINALLY.

ANd that's important for the sport moving forward. Because he's important for the sport moving forward.

I don't see it that way. This fight will tell us if cotto really had a rebirth. Will tell us exactly how good is canelo. The winner probably fights the winner of jacobs-quillin. I believe if canelo or cotto dominate this fight, they will get the courage to face ggg sooner or later. Cotto could just win and retire, he has nothing more to prove but i think he will take this as far as he can if he keeps winning

Best case scenario if no ggg. Cotto makes us a favor and takes floyds 0. Alot is at stake

    This isn't a megafight though.

It will sell a lot of PPV's, but it's not a megafight.

The only megafight right now in boxing is Ward-Kovalev.

ummm....if cotto wins...what makes you think hell "masquerade as the mw champ for years to come"??? cotto might actually retire either way after saturday....guy is making 20 mil .....i mean if he won it would be tough to pass up more money.....but 20 mil is a nice haul on your way out and cotto has made alot of money in his career and isnt too bad with it either from what i hear

One that shakes up the boxing world. Two potentially or already great fighters in their prime with the courage to face one another.

This is a really good point. When most people think "mega fight" I think they assume it's a huge fight in terms of PPV.

Ward-Kovalev is truly a "mega fight" in terms of boxing landscape. Two obvious p4p fighters, both undefeated. Yet that fight would do half the PPV numbers of a Cotto-Canelo.

Maybe "mega fight" should be related to boxing landscape, and "money fight" should be PPV.

I doubt it would make 1/4. 250k would be a great achievement for Kova vs Ward.

Its not a mega fight. Not even close. A mega fight defines a hotly disputed weight class or brings two outstanding champions from two adjacent weight classes together in the ring. Americans think every other fight is a mega fight nowadays.

Two B fighters, one of who is wayyy passed his best and the other's best win is a disputed decision over austin trout. Hardly mega by any definition. That's ignoring the fact its for a fake middleweight title fought at 1 pound above the weight class below and that neither of them will fight an actual top 5 middleweight.

A good fight though, just doesn't define anything.

Good post. I agree with a lot of it. Great fight, a fight that fans want...but probably doesn't do much to enhance anything. A decent scalp for whoever wins.

Well of course it won't. The winner is really "the man" at middleweight in name only.
