Miguel Cotto blasts WBC "Greed has to stop!" Reacts to 1.1 million fee & being stripp

Dude, you're wrong on this one. We need sanctioning bodies to accurately rate fighters. There has to be a competitive architecture to the sport. In sports where all of the teams or players will meet each other in a season in elimination matches, this doesn't matter so much. But in boxing where fighters fight once or twice a year, there is no other way to fairly figure out who deserves to be considered the best.

That's why the UFC just recently started ranking fighters. For the first twenty years of the sport they could throw whoever they wanted in with the champ and claim they were "monsters" "killers" "the best in the sport" when it was all hype and bull****. The UFC would pluck a fighter out of obscurity, build him up to look unbeatable in fights against bums, and then feed him to the champ. But these guys were no hopers and would quickly accumulate a trail of losses and sink back into nothing before they were eventually cut from the promotion. It was all the UFC's stategy of hyping and protecting their big money makers.

They got to claim they were the best fighters in the world, because they didn't have to fight anyone in Asia, Africa, or Europe. The UFC doesn't do any cross promotion. It's all fighters in their house. They make the belts, and only people signed to their brand can wear it, sort of like what Haymon is trying to do with the PBC. Without those rankings, nobody good has to fight anybody else good. They can ignore fighters who are the best in the world who are with other promoters or who live in foreign countries. That's unacceptable in a global sport.

The WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF may not be perfect, but they are still good guides, like boxrec, and the sport badly needs them. Gennady Golovkin is a great example of what I'm talking about. When he was fighting in Khazakstan American's didn't have access to any of his fights. Without the sanctioning bodies we never would have known what a great fighter he was if he hadn't been brought to the States. Same goes for Roman Gonzalez. Most people on this board had never heard his name before he fought on HBO in the United States. He only got that chance because he'd defended his belt a dozen times in Japan.

There are 17,500 professional boxers in the world. You can't watch all of their fights. It's just not physically possible. Not even all the televised matches. You are going to miss something.

Ranking and sanctioning bodies are necessary to the health of the sport.

 

Why was cotto paying the sanctioning fees without a problem before golovkin became mandatory for the belt?

I'm actually glad that fighters are becoming smarter and are the ones profiting the most in boxing. After all he is the one fighting in the ring. Is time for fighters to take care of themselves instead all these promoters and organizations.

He's right. $1.1 million is bullsh*t. They need to have a flat fee when a purse goes beyond a certain amount, not a percentage. If I was Cotto, I wouldn't pay either.

 

I just checked the purses since I couldn't believe Cotto was getting 30 million to fight Canelo. Seriously, why is Canelo getting 1/5th the money when they draw the same?

That middleweight belt just freaking multiplied Cotto's earning potential. How the hell could Roc Nation even afford to pay Cotto 15 million dollars to fight Geale on a regular HBO show? It only garnered 1.6 million viewers. They must have lost 10 million bucks! It doesn't make any sense.

 

They have already started. Fighters are standing up for themselves. Remember is the fighter that makes the belt not the other way around. Fans decide what fights they want to see. I bet Cotto vs Canelo(for no belts), gets more PPV buys than GGG vs any tomato cans for the undisputed belt. :hi:

 

There is no $1.1 million fee. RocNation paid 800k for Cotto's cowardice allowing him to fight Canelo instead of Golovkin.

300k is a standard percentage of his guaranteed purse.

 

Cotto is a fraud indeed, he essentially wasted everyone's time in middleweight division since June 2014.

He has the right to do so. GGG is a better boxer, a much better puncher, and a considerably larger man. That is just too many advantages for one man to have over the other. Cotto earned his accolades, let him retire in peace.
