In terms of footwork? No. He was known more as a fighter who'd stand in front of you, slip and counter you in the pocket.
We're talking in fighters respective primes here obviously, therefore you've made a complete and total tit of yourself by mentioning those fights for Jones.
His footwork wasn't even that great. Seriously, his handspeed and workrate was his greatest asset. He had good movement as well, but not even close to the best footwork and movement of all time.
Ali and Walcott and Tunney at HVWT....Conn at LTHVY ...ARCHER ,LEONARD....Buchanan,Laguna,....WILLIE PEP...
I have got to say I have only seen him fight around ten times but his footwork has always impressed me. After the chavez fight he wasn't the same fighter but his footwork was great before that fight, thats the first thing I noticed when I first saw him fight against James Mgirt, his handspeed was great too, but his footwork stood out for me.
Ali has nothing on the Pea. Lets see Ali avoid a 9 punch combination from a young speed puncher like De La Hoya
Still Ali. If you want to 'equalize' fighters using pound-for-pound at the expense of the heavyweights, You need to do the same thing in reverse when considering movement and footwork. Ali moved better than most welterweights.
I agree excellent topic. Footwork is very underrated here and most people who have never stepped foot in a ring don't know how hard it can be facing someone with excellnet footwork.
