I am shocked that people saw the fight close or had cotto winning.

The fight was a tale of two halves. Cotto imo competitively controlled the 1st half of the fight with his superior boxing and workrate. Canelo competitively controlled the 2nd half with a combo of the classic Cotto fade and Canelo's strength/pressure coming into play more. Personally I thought Cotto won 115-113(thought Cotto won 6 out of the first eight rounds and nicked one of the remaining) though I can't argue with a Canelo win as the fight was close and Canelo definitely landed the harder shots throughout. But the scorecards are insanity. Neither fighter did anything that warranted nine rounds in their favor, much less ten rounds and eleven rounds. Canelo getting more than every benefit of the doubt is an established "little extra" in his game, and it's not a good look for boxing when it happens like this. Cotto needed a knockout to win before the fight even started as the judges already had their cards filled out.

The scores weren't bad. The fight wasn't close in my eyes.

I cant see how this fight can be scored for Cotto, but I also can't see how anyone calls it a blow out. A lot of strong shots that Canelo threw in the early rounds were simply not landing, Cotto's defense was on point and he was outboxing Canelo. As the fight progressed Canelo started to time him, that right hand fake to left uppercut was beautiful, and he was landing loads of counter uppercuts. Cotto was definitely outlanding Canelo though in the first 4 rounds imo, I think compubox was far off, but that being said I had Canelo winning 8-4, but I could understand 7-5.

I had it close - even at the second viewing - Cotto took punches on the gloves , protecting himself well and hitting. He stuck to his plan and did pretty well. Canelo looked better landing punches - and I think he had the edge and won 7 rounds. A fair desion. In Madison Sq. Garden it could“ve been the other way round -

I thought it was a clear win for Canelo. Even the shots that landed on Cotto's gloves seemed more damaging than anything Cotto landed clean. Canelo won on aggression alone. I don't know anyone or any publication that scored it for Cotto or very close other than a few fans here and the two sites mentioned earlier in this thread. Most had Canelo winning decisively. Cotto seemed weak. Not the biggest GGG fan but I think he beats Canelo.

I think the problem is we go into a bout with some pretext. For Canelo it was for him to bust up Cotto. Because that did not really happen those rounds (at first glance) probably looked more like Cotto's than they actually were. Tired and listening to the fairly pro-Cotto commentary, I thought the fight was very close.

Re-watching the next day I could not give Cotto more than four rounds. It terms of design what he was doing appeared good but in terms of execution it was a different story. Much was slipped, blocked and Miguel often wasn't stepping in with his punches, trying to get out of range before landing. Saul did a great job of blocking the hook. Trying to remember quality head shots landed by Miguel is tough.

On the other side, though Canelo neglected his jab in the later stages, his cross, uppercut and hook are what proved the highlight of most rounds. Yes, it is still frustrating watch him take five after landing solidly but then his defensive work often reduced Cotto's offence by around 70%; the Puerto Rican getting through with the odd jab or a right hand at full extension.

Clearly Cotto is still a top fighter, and you can see why he and Freddie thought they were doing well, but when you break it down to boxing's most simple terms (hit n' not get hit) Canelo had the advantage.

HBO was in rare form on Saturday nite. They were pushing the Canelo thing hard from the the get. He won the fight, but it wasn't a good look for HBO. I don't generally buy into such things, but it was pretty blatant.

It was close, but the result isn't what was questionable to me. Wide scorecards were wide. The right guy won. It happens.

    Cotto marks up VERY easy.

How much punishment did his face take in the entire fight barring the 12th round? Very very little. That shows you how much Canelo landed.

I cant see how people gave Cotto more than 3 rounds at most. I gave him 2 rounds, one of which was the 1st, which could have realistically gone to Canelo too. If Cotto got the not, it would have been an absolute robbery and black eye for boxing. Good thing Roach, Bad Left Hook and Bleacher report folks aren't judges.

I think the fight was close. Canelo not only led in powershots, but he hurt Cotto in several occasions, but showed too much respect. Cotto, on the other hand, was busier with the jabs, outlanding Canelo in that department. It seemed Cotto was also the busier fighter, but many punches didn't land and the most that did had little effect on Alvarez. When a fight has only a difference of 20 punches landed overall, I think a draw is fair. That was the case here, only Canelo's punches had more snap and on occasion did hurt Cotto, while Cotto was never able to do more than probably stun Alvarez once or twice at most throughout the whole fight.

I was in and out of the fight as I was drunk and half asleep. the Rigo fight was so bad I was hardly awake for the war that followed

Cotto lost, I'm surprised people think otherwise. I mean on this forum people thought Pacquiao beat Mayweather so I'm no longer surprised at anything but Cotto had no power on his shots and never once troubled Canelo whose punches seemed to make Cotto at the very least buckle or turn a little when hit
