I am shocked that people saw the fight close or had cotto winning.

That is how we differ when judging fights. The punch stats could be indetical each round, but if only one fighter's do any damage, then it only makes sense to award him the round.

I had 118-110 for Canelo and I'd give Cotto 3 rounds AT BEST so I had no problem with the scorecards. Competitive rounds doesn't always equal close scores.

Your opinion when it comes to Mexican fighters means absolutely nothing. Nothing. You are the most biased dude of all time. Worse than anyone else. You don't even admit outright that Chavez Whitaker was a robbery.

Your post sums up the fight pretty well.
Expectations and stereotypes, people often see and score fights based on that alone. "Canelo is supposed to be battering Cotto from pillar to post."
"Cotto is following the gameplan and sticking the jab out and lateraling to the sides."

Then those not educated in to how to properly score a fight don't view the intracacies that are going on inbetween.

Cotto was busier, but whats not seen by the novice scorer is that most of his shots were being slipped, blocked, and even a good chunk of the shots that were landing, were being ridden by Canelo with his head movement, lessening the effect of the connect.
Those having it close, credit Cotto for his defense, but fail to do the same for Canelo's, when Canelo's defense was actually better.

Cotto was the busier fighter but despite being busier, did not land more connects that Canelo.
Canelo lander cleaner harder shots and at significantly higher connect %.

Canelo simply outboxed and outgunned Cotto.

Canelo blocked and slipped most of Cotto's punches.. Watch the fight again and see a defensive counter puncher with power in action.

That's HBO for as long as they've been covering boxing.

I didn't see their broadcast, but I trust that they over sugarcoated anything Canelo did. That however doesn't take away from the fact he clearly was winning the rounds.

I will watch the HBO replay on Saturday, mostly because I missed the Vargas Miura match; but the first time through it looked like a lot more of Cotto's punches were landing and a lot more of Canelo's punches were missing than compubox implied. Canelo's defense looked fairly ordinary and I thought, "Here's the Lara match all over again." Canelo plods forward, can't cut off the ring, and gets jabbed over and over.

I was watching it on UK time, so I should preface my opinion by saying I was very drunk.

There were a bunch of people watching it and talking/shouting throughout the whole thing so I couldn't hear the commentary.

Now; I was surprised by how well Cotto boxed and kept all the rounds fairly competitive. At the end, I had it either 115-113 or 116-112 for Canelo. As well as I thought Cotto boxed, I couldn't score the fight to him and I couldn't give him 6 rounds. His jab, movement and intelligence kept it close but the damaging, quality shots were more cinsistently landed by Alvarez and he deserved the decision.

i agree with this. I thought Cotto did a pretty good defensive job and I saw Canelo missing a lot and hitting him on the gloves a lot. I thought Canelo definitely landed the harder more telling punches but I didn't see a lot of them, which like someone said, one hard punch from Canelo may have captured the judges nod to negate whatever punches thrown by Cotto. But lets consider that you had a rehydrated Welter weight fighting a rehydrated middleweight. It was almost like watching a Chavez junior fight. As hard as Cotto punches in the lighter division, it didn't have much effect against a full middleweight.

Should have watched the Mexican commentators. They had Cotto winning it.

After reading the discussion around here, I was expecting to see a closer fight. Canelo won this clearly. I had trouble giving Cotto many rounds. I gave him 3 or 4 rounds tops, half of those out of sympathy.
