Canelo gets a lot of priviliges when it comes to scoring

Not for nothing, I felt the BoxAzteca commentators/scoring was very biased. I think they had it out for Nelo lol

 

I was surprised most gave the last 3 rounds to him. Cotto made him miss bad and scored well with the jab.

I swear im slowly loosing my love for this sport as the years pass.

 

When your opponent's punches are that damn hard and crisp and landing very often there is not much you can do to make the judges think you won the fight. Cotto did an excellent job scoring points but Canelo did an excellent job winning the fight. He beat up Cotto, Cotto didn't beat him up. So the point scoring is not enough for an educated judge or fan to score in favor of Cotto.

I wanted Cotto to win but his opponent was just too big and hard hitting.

 

Funny you say that...almost seems like they're a lil jealous of his ez road to the money. Where Chavez and Marquez had to earn whatever they made. I had it 7/5 for Canelo....could even go 8/4 Canelo.

 

It was a close fight but I did have Canelo winning, though only by a round.

The HBO commentary was bad though and could have influenced some peoples scoring. The later rounds Cotto was out boxing Canelo, making him miss and controlling the rounds but all the HBO commentators could says was how strong Canelo looked and how Cotto punches were not having any effect and ignoring how Canelo lost rounds 9-11 quite easily.

 

TV Azteca had Cotto winning 117-111.
The Mexican newspaper La Prensa called the decision a robbery.
Juan Manuel Marquez called it a draw.
Live coverage on Sherdog had it a draw.
Bad Left Hook had it a draw.
Dan Rafael ESPN's boxing guy had it 115-113 for Canelo.
Bleacher Report had it 115-113 for Canelo.
The Guardian has the fight 115-113 for Canelo too.
USA Today scored it 115-113 for Canelo.
Boxingjunkie.com has it 115-113 too.
Sports Illustrated 115-113 Canelo.
The scene has it 115-113 for Canelo.
Las Vegas Review Journal has it 115-113 for Canelo.
Carlos Narvaez for ESPN called it 115-113 for Canelo.
Floyd Mayweather thought it was a lot closer than the judges scorecards.

The Associated press has it 116-112 for Canelo.

After the fight, Compubox tweeted a poll asking who won the fight and 35% out of 228 respondents said Cotto.

I'm still waiting to see the round by round scoring from compubox since they didn't update every round. My guess is that there will be rounds that Cotto outlanded Canelo, and several nearly even rounds. I'm not saying that Cotto won, but the people who are saying that this fight wasn't close and that Canelo dominated are nuts. I'll watch the HBO cheerleader replay on Saturday and maybe start smoking what they are smoking.

He does but I don't think any of his fights were robberies at all, not even Lara which probably was the most controversial one of the lot.

But he does have that advantage going in that if the fight can go either way, it's going to Canelo.

 

Canelo for some reason is not very liked by a lot of the boxing media in Mexico.
I didn't see the Azteca broadcast, but I saw their post fight show afterward.
I believe there is 4 or 5 guys on the actual broadcast team that include Chavez Sr. and MAB. Most in that broadcast team felt the fight was close but edged toward Cotto.

The unofficial scorer of the Azteca broadcast team (the Harold Lederman of the group) ridiculously had it 117-111 for Cotto, which the rest of the broadcast team did not agree with.

Ironically, the one known detractor of Canelo's whole career on the team didn't agree with anyone else on the broadcast and voiced that he had seen a totally different fight from anyone on their team and thought that Canelo had improved by leaps and bounds from the previous fights he's seen of him and thought Canelo controlled the fight, landed the cleaner much harder blows, and dominated Cotto.

The postfight wrap up show also included Juan Manuel Marquez and Bernardo Osuna of ESPN.
Marquez scored it a draw but said looking at the fight as a whole, he slightly favored Canelo's work in it.

The problem with all of this is that both Marquez and Chavez Sr. have had issues with Canelo in the past that have come to a war of words in the press. So I would say that their opinions on the fight you can somewhat take with a grain of salt.

Bernardo Osuna btw scored it 116-112 for Canelo and thought it was clear.

Except for that joke of the unofficial judge that scored it 117-111 for Cotto, the one thing that the whole crew agreed with was that the official scores were to wide and didn't reflect the competitiveness of the fight.

 

Even if the fight is going against him some see it a draw.

This is professional boxing. The power of the punches should count. If your punches hurt your opponent more than your opponents hurt you, in this case substantially more, you should get more credit.
