Calzaghe never faced a prime fighter like Ward, no question about it. Dawson alone may have been a stronger win than any of Calzaghe's. It would still be a great fight though.
Kessler and Lacy were prime, but i see your point. However, i would still pick Calzaghe. Remember, in a fight between Calzaghe and Ward, you pick the winner on how you think their styles would mesh and who would come out on top, not who has the better resume.
Yes. I thought it back in 2012 when Ward beat Dawson and I still think it today - I think it would be a difficult fight for both but I think Calzaghe would edge it. What the hell has Ward done since that proves he's vastly superior than he was when he fought Dawson? Nothing.
Honestly, I have to agree I don't like this fight for Ward. I don't like a converted southpaw against Calzaghe. There best punch is almost always the left hook, and left hooks are not a good punch against the southpaw stance. They are usually glancing off the guard or hitting the back of his head. Jeff Lacy found that out. Of course, Ward is far better than Lacy ever thought about being, but still I'm skeptical of a left handed orthodox against Joe. Without a big right hand, Calzaghe is a monstrous challenge for anyone.
I don't really rate Ward's win over Dawson that highly compared to hos other wins. Dawson was dragged down too far in weight. I think a prime Calzaghe could have won but it would be a good fight.
