I've boxed for a while, although I haven't done as much sparring as I need to do. I started up this geen ku doe (sp) martial arts class, and love it. The instructor is a 5th degree black belt. I started like maybe 4 months ago, sparred him, and was amazed how lightning fast a 51 year old guy could be!!! He sparred me with just using hands (no kicks allowed), but he didn't fight conventional. They fight with there best hand in the front (I actually like it), then when he boxes he rears his body back a little bit. Basically he keeps his head back so whenever you chase him he's going to counter you. You chase him, and while your going in he's going to backfist you, or in a real fight he's going to blast the mule kick. He's a little taller than me so it was hard as hell getting in on him because he knows how to keep me at bay. I sparred a couple more times after that, and did alright...Most guys can't even hit him once because he's so fast, and has such good defense, but I managed to hit him quite a few times.
SO, one of his prized trainees moved back here, and started going back to the class. the kid is REAL GOOD. My instructor said he put like 4 years in with him, practically every day they trained. The guy trains the class whenever my instructor isn't there. Yesterday he wants to see where were at, and he wants to spar all of us. First kid gets up, and this guy only puts on one glove on his lead hand. One hand vs two...and he destroys the kid who is pretty good himelf...backfisting him, hooking, etc. Fought exactly like my instructor does. So, whenever it's my turn I knew damn well I couldn't just stay back, and let this quick mofo counter punch me, I just ATTACKED. I was mainly so busy throwing punches he couldn't get anything off on me. Finally, he's like "i gotta push this guy back...Give me my other glove." So we had a good sparring session, and I did quite well, but the way I had to fight....Was basically like a toughman fighter, but with straight down the middle punches, and controlled aggression. Kind of sloppy for boxing how long I have.
My question is...how the hell else do you fighter a counter puncher with a little more speed than you, more skilled, more experienced, etc? I figured the only way I could fight him was to FORCE him to brawl, and take away his tecnical skills. I mean I did very well, but wondering if there's anything else I can do/ try?

Simple be patient and make him lead. The more punches you throw more opportunities for the counter puncher to counter.

I understand that much, but both of these guys (the instructor, and his prized student) are super fast. There both mainly counter punchers, but can be aggressive to. Whenever I sparred with my instructor I tryed to be patient, and wait for him to move. Thing was...Once he attacked me there was NO DAMN WAY I could stop him cept punch while he was punching, and take some shots. The guy can seriously backfist you 5 times before you know what hit you. His arm is like a big spring for backfisting.
SO...It's like either stand back, and let these guys pick me apart slowly because there more skilled, quicker, more experienced, etc...OR go straight after them, land some punches, but give them the opportunity to counter. There fighting style is what makes it so hard to hit them. Basically if you ever seen Bruce Lee fight...These guys fight exactly like him.

It sounds like theyre simply superior fighters to you as they are vastly more experienced and have been training for alot longer. However i have seen a few martial arts guys come to my gym before saying they a so n so belt in something or other and as soon as they get hit they dont no what to do. I dont have a clu to be honest mate just see if they get flustered if you give them a good dig.

i did MA for a long time before boxing and i had to spar my 2 instructors a lot. both of them had more experience than i have years on earth so it was a real *****. You gotta try real hard to figure out what they like to do, their combos and quick n easy reaction type attacks if you know what i mean. For example by the time i was done one of my favorites was bait them into a side kick and tap it off and spin hook kick them in the head. look out for **** like that and learn their game. the best you can hope for for now is just hanging in their with him. winning a few rounds will come way down the road. k, end rant.

also, figure theyve more than likely seen every strategy you can think of and every attack from almost every angle. so if youre gonna score anything its not gonna be the first strike you throw and if you charge in hes gonna tear you up. just take your time.

Yeah, fighting somebody superior is a little indimidating. I mean I did very well against his student, and he told me I was pretty good. Only thing I'd do wrong is I'd back him in to a corner, go to work, but drop my hands a little bit.
I fought him using the style of like a Pac....Just charging in, but with mainly straight punches down the middle. He didn't hit me that much, or get a chance to coutner (because I was simply throwing so much), but didn't understand any other way than to beat a superior fighter than to FIGHT HARD. I train like hell for boxing, but hardly ever spar. he's going to start training me so that's exactly what I need. He's exactly my size, and a bad mofo (I'll box him any day, but street fighting he'd rip me to bits honestly). Guess I'll just soak in everything he knows, and then go out and beat him ;)

OMG! My instructor spars with me again today...Haven't sparred him in like 4 months. After sparring his student (that used his style), and doing pretty well I was quite confident....Uhh...To confident. I was thinking I'm gonna run this guy down, stay busy, and do good just like I did against the other guy. WRONG! His student has 4 years of experience, and he has 35 (5th degree black belt). Dunno why I looked over this fact LOL.
I charge him the first time, and it was alright. I must have thrown 50 punches per minute, and he counters *some*...I wasn't landing much at all of course. After a while he starts to get aggressive himself, and beat the **** outta me! LOL. Of course I understand I was being so aggressive, and he has to get me off him, but I took the most wicked shots I ever felt in my life. He'd backfist me, rock my head to one side, and then with the same hand he hooks back the other way...REAL HARD, and REAL QUICK.
It's amazing how good, and superior somebody can really be. It's like until you get good, and understand who's actually good is when you understand how superior somebody really is. Guess if I did it for 35 years I'd be a bad mofo to.

no worries. backfists do about as much as if not less than a jab anyways so you might consider him lucky damage wise. although IMO they're far faster than jabs, but the trade off is theyre telegraphed at the elbow so you get that split second to move.

Jeet Kun Do "Way of the Intercepting Fist"

    LOOK

If you want to beat these guys

you got to be like water.

"Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way round or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water my friend."

yeah, that's what he's trying to teach us. I just straight up am not relaxed. I don't get stiff or anything, but I'm overly aggressive...Then again I'd rather go down with a fight than to stand back, and get picked apart by somebody who's class is out of my world.
As for the backfist...Yeah, it's one of the fastest punches you can throw, and his is quite amazing. One of my buddies is a pretty decent boxer, and he backfisted him 5 times in a row! After I sparred with him, and then watched him fight the others...I was like no damn wonder I can't beat this guy!
His fighting style (for street fighting) it's almost impossible to get to him without him ripping you apart. He leans back...You can't punch his face, you go for his body, and he's just going to smack you, or mule kick you, and break your knee cap. Quite amazing you could just wait for somebody to come at you, lean back a little, sidekick them in the knee, and it's downhill for them from there ;). He's going to have us start sparring with kicking soon...I'm gonna be hurtin'.
