Its better making that call than to risk the kids life. You never know, he could have been brutally knocked out, then what would people be saying. The ref should have stopped it. Simple fact is, Quillins legs and eyes weren't right, ref made the right call. Saved, he will fight another day.

just watched this a few times, NO WAY should that have been stopped, it's the fight game, not a tickling contest, he has trained for months and would NOT have wanted to be stopped, by the time the ref had him he was ok, an 8 count was all that was required, YES he may have got knocked out but he also may have done what Benn did on that tragic night (hopefully without the injuries of course). These guys are bred to fight, let them fight - think we're all suffering these days from "my kids are not allowed to climb trees" syndrome !!

I really didn't like it, and I don't like this early stoppage trend.
I've seen guys that looked worse and actually came back to win the fight, or at least make it competitive.
That said, I really dislike Al's lapdog Quillin.

If British stoppages had been around in the early 60's, Cooper would probably have had a TKO4 win over some guy named Clay.

How can you argue over whether it was premature when Quillin didn't even get upset over it?

Its irellevant if a fighter wants to be stopped!!! You have to save a fighter from himself sometimes. Just look at Enzo Mac getting sparked or Khan he always gets back up even when really hurt.

Quills hands were down by his waist his legs weren't underneath him - it was a correct stoppage.

it's totally relevant, it's his life and his job, the corner or the fighter should be given the benefit of the doubt unless it's a beating, and it wasn't, two guys going for it, one gets caught and get the wobbles, he didn't even go down, the guys are SO fit they can hold and recover in just a few seconds, this is the guys livelyhood, which is made from people watching/paying for a FIGHT, it will put viewers off if it becomes about if and buts rather than what it actually is, fighting is primitive, we love it because it's primitive, so let's not pretend it's tiddlywinks !!

No again it isn't. Yes he's trained its his career. he can come back. Who's to say that another huge right hand doesn't end his career. He was all over the show couldn't defend himself which is usually one of rules ref give out. He couldn't defend himself so it was over.

Yep its primitive but in a situation where the other guy has been hit hurt and tried to hold on for dear life (taking more punches in the process) its pretty clear he's struggling and at the point the ref - who has to be factual, scientific almost and anything but primitive makes the correct call - up close so he can see Quills eye's I might add.

We don't always get highlight reels KO's like Marquez v Pac sometimes a guy is struggling and needs to be saved this was one of those occasions.

If I guy gets wobbled as bad as Quillin was just think what's happened to his brain for that to happen - he then takes a boat load of more shots not all of which he stops and then is still wobbling about - he was hurt and badly.

The ref should have given him a standing 8 count and then made his decision after that, after all that's what the count is all about, to give one of the fighters time to recover. If after the 8 count his eyes are shot and legs like bamby then I agree, he needs to be protected. Quillin needs to learn from this that if he gets tagged, take a knee and force the 8 count as if you don't you're in the hands of a referee who would rather be called to cautions then be accused of having blood on his hands

There was NO standing 8 count allowed.

Quillin was out on his feet, and barely able to stand up unaided.

One more heavy shot could have done untold damage.

There are countless handicapped boxers, and families of boxers killed in the ring, who would say the ref did a great job.

No he wasn't. He was badly hurt. The next step was a knockdown from which he could have recovered. It sounds dramatic and sensational when we say things like 'his career could have been ended' but the reality is that is no more likely than in a standard fight.

That sort of fight is the perfect type of fight to not end your career. It's the beatdowns that usually get you. IF this fight had been stopped in the same manner ala Corrales Castillo then you need to stop the fight because a beat down has preceded it (not a great example because Castillo was genuinely defenceless).

You've answered your own question, or should that be questioned your own answer ?

Quillin was done, hands down, staggering like a drunk, and eyes rolling. ( numerous videos on YT showing the events leading upto the stoppage )

He'd spent the previous 30 seconds struggling to defend himself and trying to avoid Jacobs punches, whilst still compos mentis, yet you think he would still be able to defend himself at the point the fight was waved off ?

The only fighters to sustain career ending injuries, were those who had been eating shot after shot in every fight, or those who'd been exhausted prior to being KO'd ?

    Yeah right.

You don't stop fights because a fighter is badly fight. You stop them because they are unable to continue or at risk of serious damage.

    Agree to disagree.

The ref got it spot on quillin' s legs had gone his eyes were staring into nowhere he was is in no state to defend himself. Oh by the way he is not an elite fighter he is an unprofessional coward who vacated his belt so he didn't have to fight korobov and then failed to make weight for the lee fight. He did not deserve another shot and also it was jacobs defending his belt you fool

These ones are tough on the ref; stop the fight and get the flack some people are giving him now or let the fight continue and watch Quillin possibly get brutally KOed and people will say he could have saved Quillin earlier. It times like this we should realise how tough a refs job can trully be instead of focusing on a subjective negative.

For me, all things considered, it was a good stoppage. Quillin was rocked by the first straight right hand and didn't survive/recover enough to avoid the temple shot later on in the round. This temple shot scrambled his brain even more than the straight right so there was a good chance that Quillin wouldn't be able to survive the rest of the round.

Often these calls are split second decisons and regardless of what we think or how bad some stoppages are, a fighters safety should always come before our entertainment or a fighters will to carry on fighting and to get the win.
