What books would you recommend based around Joe Louis? I really would like to learn more about him. I'm aware that all books based around Louis will touch very heavily on the impact he had on race relations. As they should do. However I am in more interested in his actual boxing career and his legacy. Many thanks :good
There's a book I have called Beyond Glory written by David Margolick. It's more about his fights with Schmeling than his actual life and career, but it's very well written and I'd strongly recommend it.
I do not have a good recommendation, everything iI have looked has had a focus on the social change element.
Joe Louis My Life by Joe ,and Edna & Art Rust jnr. Focuses on his bouts ,with added comments from Louis about his personal life at the time. Recommended:good
My favourite ever boxing book. It feels like Louis is actually talking to you...it was released a couple of years before Joe's death, it's real warts and all stuff, it feels like a confessional...spellbinding stuff. Unfortunately, I lent it to a friend (1st print) whom I am no longer in touch with and never got it back.
Thank you very much guys Beyond the Glory and Joe Louis my life are very cheap on Amazon so I am ordering them as we speak
"In Black and White" by Donald McRae is outstanding. I'm glad it won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award. One of the best boxing books I have read, hard to put down.
