I am still trying to figure out whether Joshua answered questions about himself and his potential or whether he was sort of exposed. I just don't know. I am changing sides by the hour. But the thought of him in with David Haye just seems like a KO waiting to happen. I don't think Eddie is silly enough to put him in with Haye. But I suppose it depends on how Haye looks next after having three years out. What you think?
AJ showed some weaknesses, but i think some people may be over reacting. For a start, he has had 15 pro fights and whilst he had great success as an amateur he was still very raw and got by more on his natural physical gifts due to him coming to boxing later than usual. His technical progress since then has been good, but naturally there are still going to be some flaws still to iron out. There is also the fact that AJ let the occasion and emotion get to him and he tried to blast Whyte out rather than stick to a gameplan of out boxing his opponent. It was also the first time as a pro that AJ has fought past 3 rounds, been punched properly and had an opponent who didnt fall over as soon as he hit them. Joshua answered some questions last night (relative to the level of opposition), but he still has many to answer and we did see some flaws that we hadn't seen before due to him not being tested enough. As for Haye, i wouldn't risk a fight against him yet. If Haye isn't completely shot then he will have too much for AJ at this point in his career. Chisora seems to be the next opponent which is good. Chisora, whilst faded, is still durable and isn't afraid to come forward and let his hands go. Toper, Scott, Thompson or a slight step up to Takam would be good if he comes through Chisora.
The Whyte fight answered more questions than it raised in my opinion. Some questions that needed to be answered were: can he go several round? can he take a punch? can he come through adversity in a fight? does his power carry into later rounds? and he answered them all. He also would have learnt more from that one fight than the rest of his pro fights put together. I am much more confident in how he would do against top fighters now than I was before the fight.
After 3 years Haye is an unknown quantity and wouldn't even provide a good measuring stick. 15 fights is very green, especially for a heavyweight . Why the rush? Why the Joshua hostility??
There is more chance of Amir Khan taking a shot on the chin from AJ and shaking it off with a laugh than there is of Hearn being stupid enough to put his man in the ring with Haye for a good while. If Haye returns with most of his speed and power intact, and is injury free (that being what will govern the success of his return more than anything else), you'll not see AJ fighting him in 2016. Why put a young and inexperienced boxer in with a superfast and hard-hitting experienced guy when you don't have to? Haye would finish AJ's career far too early and if I was Hearn I'd not be risking that at any point in the near future.
I agree, if Haye is anything like he was before then Hearn won't make the fight anytime soon. Saturday night Haye was very complimentary to Joshua but you could see on his face he had seen something that he liked. Haye runs rings around him if he is as athletic as he once was, Joshua looks too robotic to me, he has bulked up too much. Joshua has no head movement, looked wide open at times and relatively easy to hit, Haye would seriously exploit that. Saying all that, if AJ connects on Hayes head its game over
Thing is we don't know what Haye has left and his next fight won't really tell us much either. I do agree that his speed that he had would cause Joshua many problems.
Haye should have to beat the likes of Cornish and Dillion Whyte before he has earned the right for major honours. I loved watching him in as a cruiserweight and Valuev was quite an achievement but since then he as been an unreliable mouthy pantomime character should have to earn his way back up to big and prestigious paydays
Haye would go on his bike and wait for the Joshua tank to run dry. Then he pops up with a shot like the one that wobbled Valuev, game over.
