That's only when you measure reach from armpit to the fist on each side. Kovalev has the larger frame with broader shoulders and wider back/wingspan. It will seem like 5 inches when they're in the ring.

Kovalev is pretty robotic being straight up with little to no head movement. Ward's hand speed is about 3 times that of Kovalev and Ward's defence is at the Mayweather level.

This. Ward would control the distance against Kovalev and is much quicker. He will beat Kovalev to the punch all night long. Kovalev has a puncher's chance, in fact, a good puncher's chance but his jab will not determine the outcome of the fight.

Reach advantage wouldn't play any role in this imaginary fight which will never happen. What is important is that Kovalev knocks people down with his jab, while Ward is feather-fisted. One jab landed by Kovalev will have more effect than 3 landed by Ward.
