Luke campbell won't make it as a pro

Despite all the Matchroom hype, Campbell still appears too skittish and amateurish -- for instance, employing the pitter-patter flurries he was throwing to try and discourage a teak-tough warrior in Mendy.

To summarise, Campbell is a case of overrated punching power and an extremely porous defence.

I know Luke has stuff going on behind the scenes with his dad being seriously ill; but, unless he drastically shores up that leaky defence, it's hard to see him reaching European level, and progressing beyond that -- especially if he continually runs into fighters like Mendy who will give Campbell no respect, and will look to time him, and bully him on the inside.

 

I get what you're saying it's a surprise he moved up 12lbs from his amateur weight. Mendy has experience fighting 12 rounds with guys who are 6ft plus and weigh probably 150lbs on fight night in Postol so he was not troubled by Campbell's size at all.

Don't know if it would be wise for Campbell to move down in weight now but he may have performed well at featherweight and super weight.

He could have managed his pro career better. I still think he can pick up a world title at lightweight but his career may no be as impressive as it should be.

He's talented but not schooled and not strong at the weight. Maybe he could do better moving down.

i agree his style needs adapting and he has faults but he will find a level, what level i do not know, only time can tell.

 

This appears to be Eddie's first big mistake in thinking this dude was "special".Keeping him at domestic level and try to get his investment back is Hearn's best business plan.

 

I know Luke was a successful amateur, but a lot of people claim that GB were very lucky at London 2012. Did he deserve his gold medal?

Close, close fight, but you'd expect a potential future World Champion to deal with Mendy better, though the Frenchman certainly got greater plaudits out of shock that Campbell didn't bamboozle him.

They say you learn more from defeats, I think we learnt Campbell's corner are useless, they showed next to no leadership or direction, no change in tactics, didn't even tell him to get out of the pocket after his initial combos. That slight change in tactic would have rendered Mendy a passenger in the fight but meh! After the knockdown, they were all at sea even asking Campbell if it was a knockdown or a push. Saying that, the lad himself should have worked that out. Onwards and hopefully upwards...
