I know he fought in Europe for quite a bit back in the days. I have a couple of questions:

    1) How popular and established did he become when he started winning in Europe?

    2) Which up and coming Euro fighters did he beat?

    Thanks in advance.

Not very popular and it's nonsense that people think he went over there and cleaned out the Euro ranks, he fought nothing but scrubs from the Euro scene and scored a loss to Vasquez in France.

He's been fighting in the US since the late 90's. His Euro run was not even a notable part of his career.

The only Euro he beat that could have been considered a prospect was creampuff brit domestic Adrian Dodson, who's done nothing in return.

Then Winky has been lying during his HBO preview shows where he's stated a couple of times that he beat their best up and coming fighters and that Europeans loved his technical style.

he beat a bunch of very limited journeymen and overmatched no-hopers here in europe a couple of years ago. As far as I can remember Vasquez was the biggest name he faced in europe then.Admittingly,Vasquez was a decent skalp back then.Nevertheless,Wright is still hardly known outside the small circle of us box aficionados here in europe. I dont think that a casual sport fan or even an average fight fan has ever heard his name here.

Yeah! Steve Foster Sr and Adrian Dodson were future greats in the making till Winky derailed them!

To be fair his skills were very apparent and I enjoyed watching him, but if he thinks he beat anyone significant he's having a steffi!:patsch

I think he should fight Junior Witter at a catchweight of 150lbs. That would make for a very entertaining bout.

True, but for a Yank with a technical style he certainly got a lot of attention. The BBC, back when they did boxing, always gave his title fights a lot of coverage. Of course, that had more to do with the high calibre of his opposition rather than his amazing UK popularity. Fight world class boxers and you'll be on the stage regardless of the fact that you aren't a Gatti-esque caveman with all the skill of a punchbag.

I remember him fighting 3 times in Britain, I think he fought Bingham, Dodson + Foster. He was very impressive but a lot of that had to do with the level of opposition. I think Bingham was favourite to beat him, because Winky was unknown, if I'm correct it was a complete shutout.

I remember watching him as a young fella, cos he was on the BBC. Bingo / Foster / Dodson. He kinda went off the radar after that, but the reality is he was never that big in his own right (Wright? ;) ) just that he was fighting domestic opposition. I've often wondered why he fought on the road so much in his earlier days? I think after losing to Vargas I personally didn't pay much attention till SSM / Tito. I imagine a great number of European fans are the same.

He fought no one who was considered a real prospect and people did not care too much for him.

I can't see where Wright's style would be considered European. His high guard with his hands close to his face is nothing like the European style. Plus he bends at the waist more than European style fighters do.
