Brooklyn I really apreciate all the typing you did in this thread and there have been some very well thought out responses along with the other thing.

It strikes me that so many posters think that modern fighters are using techniques that weren't used in the 40's and 50's. Its a laughable idea if you just view some of the older fighters.

A question for those who argue this though... James Toney, a boxer who is adored on this forum for having such a tool kit in the ring, has frequently laid claim to learning his tricks from fighters such as E. Charles and the like.

How do you wash this with the idea that fighters are so much more evolved? Clearly, he doesn't believe in this myth, so why do you?

In case you are referring to me this is not at all what I said.

    Clarifications:

    (1) Time is not static, it is dynamic. The best of the 50's has been emulated through generations of fighters (i.e. "I want to be SSR", followed by "I want to be like the guy who wanted to be SRR", etc... In the process, some emules have surpassed the teachers. THis is how things work in every sphere of human activities)

    (2) In terms of technique, the elite fighters of the older days displayed greater contrast with the non-elite ones. Such contrast is attenuated nowadays given that average fighters benefited from the teachings of the great fighters of the past (through imitation). Again, this is how things work in every sphere of human activities. Only stubburn nostalgics fail to see that.

    (3) The greatest contrast between current and past fighters is expressed not in terms of technique but in terms of static and dynamic strength. All measurable athletic performances have improved as years went by; the ones that improved most were those that required the most static (weightlifting) and dynamic (track & field, football, soccer, martial arts and, yes, boxing, to name a few) strenght.

Read carefully and try at least not to distort other posters arguments.
