Fights That Almost Happened:Ray Leonard vs De La Hoya/Pacman vs Punisher

When Ray Leonard returned in 97 and fought Camacho it was in order for Top Rank to have a good reason to make Ray Leonard vs Oscar De La Hoya. Unfortunately Ray lost and Camacho went on to lose to Oscar, but if Oscar had Ray on his resume it would make him #2 G.O.A.T. in my eyes. He would have beat the man that beat all of the other men in the 80's welter and middleweight division.

Other fights that almost happened but fate intervened.

Manny Pacquiao vs Paul Williams -This almost happened for real before the accident.

I watched camacho fight and comentators said that Ray considered Roy Jones and Oscar! Good for Ray he lost!

You think odh beating srl, the one from 97' would in some insane way make odh a greater fighter ??? Wow, now I've truly heard it all.

Odh would've put srl out of his misery within 3 rounds. He was a very weak fighter by that point. Honestly, felt like a 60 year old srl that was trying to not get hurt from camacho. What was the worst part was srl trying to save face by saying, that rumor that came out was true, I did get hurt in camp.

I guess getting hurt in camp removes all punch resistance. . Ya, ok srl

It would look excellent on that resume though. Camacho got the Ray fight because he beat up Duran. No one complained then.

It would be defensively pleasing, but it would be the least amount of punches landed in a fight ever.

An agreement in principle has been reached for James Toney to defend his International Boxing Federation cruiserweight title in August against Bernard Hopkins, according to Dan Goossen, Toney's promoter.

But since the other promoter is Don King, and previous negotiations with Hopkins have been known to bog down over all sorts of matters, nothing will be certain until the signatures are on the contract.

Although Toney will be defending his 190-pound title, Hopkins, the undisputed middleweight champ, says he will enter the ring at 175 pounds.

To be determined for the match, which is expected to be on HBO pay-per-view, is a date and site.

"We'll see if we can reach agreement in a timely fashion," said HBO vice-president Mark Taffet, "and if Don finds an appropriate site, we'll be happy to go forward."

Toney-Hopkins fight disintegrates

An Aug. 9 fight between cruiserweight champ James Toney and undisputed middleweight champ Bernard Hopkins, who planned to challenge a man 30 pounds bigger, was called off Tuesday night. HBO PPV pulled the plug because promoter Don King could not deliver Hopkins' services.

King had agreed to pay Hopkins $3.5 million but when he couldn't convince HBO PPV and host site Mandalay Bay to increase the guarantees, King wanted to shave at least $500,000 from Hopkins' purse. Hopkins refused a cut. "It comes down to a fight between Don and Bernard," said Toney promoter Dan Goossen. "We stepped to the plate. We did everything we said we were going to do. We had no problem accepting the terms even though they were in Bernard's favor."

Toney, who was to earn $2.5 million, will explore other fights, Goossen said. "I don't think the timing is right for any rescheduling. We won't wait for Hopkins. We've got to move on and fight people who want to fight."

New Jersey Sports, which also represented Pernell Whitaker, was desirous of promoting a fight between the two, but AB Stars objected when it became clear that it was to be squeezed out of the picture. The Quartey-Whitaker bout became academic when Whitaker failed a drug test. In February 1998, after the attorney representing both Quartey and Square Ring threatened a lawsuit to invalidate the September 1996 agreement, plaintiffs brought this action, alleging that that agreement had been made under duress. A month later, New Jersey Sports entered into a new agreement with Quartey to be the fighter's sole promoter.

WBA doctors examined Quartey and concluded that the purported illness was fabricated. The WBA consequently stripped Quartey of his championship title.

New Jersey Sports had by this time negotiated a bout for Quartey against Felix Trinidad. Meanwhile, AB Stars received authorization from Quartey to negotiate a much more lucrative contract to fight Oscar de la Hoya. This was a match long desired by plaintiffs, and they agreed to drop their lawsuit and honor the September 1996 agreement if it came about. But then New Jersey Sports stepped in and secretly signed a contract on Quartey's behalf with de la Hoya's promoter, cutting out AB Stars but using all the terms previously negotiated by AB Stars

He looked terrible and got his ass kicked.

He looked like he went from merely "past prime" to "shot".

Also it's one of the fights that made me skeptical about fighters in their 30s moving DOWN in weight.
