It's hilarious reading this, considering that you repeatedly trashed Roy's resume about a month ago.

I never trashed Roy's resume. I called him out on ducking Collins, Michalczewski, Benn and Eubank.

And Calzaghe and Ottke if I remember.

Okay, I'm not going to continue to discuss it on this thread. If you want to debate it further, we can do it on the thread titled - 'Finally did research on Roy Jones...'

why not? holmes tried to do it to beat marciano's record, but had a cherrypick go wrong.

now then, an example of a cherry pick is a HW titlist facing a retiring 37 year old Sanders who never won anything in his life, because he'd never been albe to land a title shot even when prime. Incidentally that's an example of a cherrypick going wrong too, since worst ever Sanders easily killed prime wlad in seconds.

NOW...Holmes facing the lineal undisputed undefeated lightheavy champion in prime form is not a cherrypick. Its was an attempt at a valid defence that Holmes in his worst title form ever, narrowly, highly contentiously, lost over 2 fights.

Much as Dempsey facing LHW champ Tunney wasn't a cherrypick. It was a valid defence.

But I get your point, that Holmes was black and therefore to racists it is a cherrypick....whereas in their eyes prime waldo facing retired nobody sanders was facing some HoF legend.

Spinks-Holmes was a cherry pick. And I don't care for troglodytic ****s, so that does make me some sort of racist in the grand scheme of things. I already know how much credit you'd give Wlad for knocking out Stevenson and Kovalev.

Larry gave a guy almost 50 lbs lighter with no heavyweight experience 3 months to move up, prepare, and fight him.

    3 months

Larry himself was pretty open about the matchmaking towards the tail end of his reign. He'd be the first to tell you it was a money grab. It's not like he was Oz building this smoke and mirrors image behind the curtain. He'd had his tough fights, dealt with enough people hating him between the Ali fight, ****ey fight, and the Marciano hero worship that the dude was jaded on the sport. I don't blame him for saying "screw it" and getting the most easy paydays he could.

no. the best you can claim is that it avoided some opposition that might have been more dangerous. It was a valid defence, not a strong one, just a time passer to try and hang onto the title a bit longer without facing someone possibly more dangerous.

cherrypicking and prime opposition are polar opposites in meaning. That's is how wrong you are, but you can laugh it off np.

It was a sprint to get to 50-0 before Larry got completely burned out. That's why Spinks was Larry's 4th defense in ten months. That's not a defense schedule of a typical 35 year old long-reigning champion. That's a "get me to 50 so I can get the hell out of here" schedule.

Spinks was viewed as a "name" that wouldn't be too threatening, which is what they wanted out of the 49-0 fight. There was enough distraction around Marciano's record being tied, so they wanted what would be (in their mind) the softest touch they could sell. Mike was paid handsomely for this.

Those factors are why they only gave Spinks 3 months to get ready for it. Nobody--nobody!-- thought Mike could put on enough weight to be ready in that short of a time span, which is a big reason why Holmes was a 6 to 1 favorite. Had Holmes thought Mike posed a real threat to him, he would've wanted more than 3 months himself to prepare for him.

*It's also worth noting that more money came in on Spinks because people saw Williams, a 12 to 1 dog, have more success against Larry than they'd expected. This is also part of what prompted King to look for a smaller fighter for the 49-0 fight.

Lol, always surprised me how This forum was obsessed with joe calzaghe.

Yeah greatest SMW of all time. Others came and went but they were not career SMW . Also had the ring at LHW beating Hopkins when he was in one of the best parts of his career

He could easily have had another year, taken Berto type cherrypicks, and got 50-0
