People make too much of the Curry scare

I have seen Benitez/Curry I and Wilfred was obviously overconfident against a relatively unknown Curry. Benitez fought toe to toe and got caught by Curry while throwing his own haymaker. He walked right into a huge Curry shot and was badly hurt. But, he survived.

He would not fight Ceuvas the way he fought Curry I. He would be aware of Cuevas's power. He would also be aware of Cuevas's limitations.

Cuevas would provide Benitez with pleny of counter punching opportunities.

If Cuevas gets him on the ropes, Wilfred would slip and counter from there. He was a master of fighting off the ropes. He'd let Cuevas spend himself going for the KO

Prime Benitez is just too smart, too skilled, and too good defensively to be blown out by Ceuvas.

 

That gap in talent and accomplishments between the people Cuevas actually beat and Benitez is a mile wide. When the best guy you could muster a win against was Randy Shields (which could have gone either way), or Angel Espada then you aren't blitzing Benitez. If a prime Hearns fighting at his best weight who was bigger, hit harder, and just all around better than Cuevas couldn't blitz Benitez (who was already fading at this point) in a round or two then Cueves damn sure couldn't. Furthermore Cueves was nowhere near as fast, tall, long limbed, and dynamic as Hearns which all kept Benitez from having success with Hearns (And he still managed a KD and an SD) Cuevas deficits in those areas would be enough for Benitez to get the decision or even a late stoppage after Cuevas gets winded whiffing nothing but air.

 

I believe Hearns broke his right hand against Benitez...but it is still very debatable if he could have stopped him...I'd still lean towards a decision outcome.

 

Benitez was a boxing genius, Cuevas was a wreaking ball esp with the left hook. But a prime but some say under trained Benitez made Ray Leonard miss consistently for 14 rds till he was finally caught in the 15th. I see a prime and well trained Benitez beating the hell out of Cuevas. And pretty easily.

 

Benitez would school him.

Forget about Cuevas bombing Benitez...it wouldn't happen. El Radar, as already stated, was a defensive boxing genius...and it's a shame that fight was never made, as I believe it would have been showcase victory for Benitez.
