"But a Boxer has better hands!" These idiots don't realise how HARD it is to land that KO punch and not get taken down or get into a clinch etc. It's lotto-winning odds.
MMA draws from sports with lower rewards than top-level boxing, but that's a LOT of sports -- wrestling, sambo, judo, several varieties of tournament karate, American kickboxing, international rules kickboxing, MT, BJJ, strongman comps (for the occasional freakshow fight), sumo (ditto), kyokushin, etc. etc. You could make a long list of Olympic caliber athletes, and other world champions, who got clobbered in MMA. MMA is actually like boxing in that regard. It helps to be a good athlete for either sport, but it takes a certain type of FIGHTER to do well. Ever watched Frazier and Ali competing in athleticism tests for Superstars? It was embarrassing. But it didn't matter, because they were born fighters could beat the stuffing out of you in the ring. Both sports have pretty large talent pools, and neither rewards athleticism as much as they reward intangibles. So a boxer in MMA might do well, or they might not. Depends on how well they prepare and adjust to a totally different sport.
Great post! Olympian Level Wrestlers have been tapped out on seconds in MMA. Many say Ali is the greatest and Fraizer is top 10 @ HW. But both were shocking, athletically speaking.
Tough job with Mma rules. With power coming from your toes an Mma fighter just has to disrupt a boxers front foot or leg on the way in and the boxer will not be able to adjust to throw in time. Being off balance his arms will react for control of the other guys arms knowing he is being closed on. A boxer would want to be practicing a great side step technique and heading outside the lead arm before committing to fight an Mma. A good switch hitter who does it on the move maybe able to get their leg out the way and counter well up the outside. Pull the front foot back behind and catch them with a rear hook (which is now a lead counter hook as you've switched) right as they land a boxer could finish it from there cause most mma guys usually turn into face where you have just gone to.
I think certain styles would do better others... Prime or near prime Pac with some wrestling and BJJ training? Forget it, that guy would cause all sorts of problems from 125-155.
Heavyweight boxing guys would find it much easier to compete because one shot ends most fights and the ground game is a lot less, takes too much energy to go for pull downs.
Boxing stance is generally foot forward. MMA is generally wider apart and more face-on. This is to avoid giving away a single leg and to react better to a shoot.
From what position? Foot forward? Yes. Judo/Wrestlers stance is nothing like a Boxers stance. Much more upright.
I said generally because there are some MMA guys like Machida who do their own strange, but effective foot-forward stuff.
Right. Can't speak for wrestlers but when I did Judo the whole point was to grab the other guy. Very hard to do that with one arm if your stance is skewed.
