What hurts his legacy the most is that he was never able to regroup after that loss IMO...

Holyfield lost to quite a few fighters but he gets a pass because he always made an amazing comeback...Loses to Bowe, beats Bowe in the rematch. Loses to Moorer and the rubber-match to Bowe, KOs Tyson and Moorer in the rematch.

Tyson after losing to Douglas came back to beat Ruddock twice which was impressive to say the least as Ruddock was ranked #4 and was highly avoided. But then he went to prison and it was all over. He came out and was never the same. He never won a really big fight anymore, and his antics in and out of the ring only made it worse. It really makes it seem like Douglas exposed him, when in reality it was just a set of circumstances that cut his career at the top short...He should have gotten the Holyfield fight in 91 before going to prison...No doubt in my mind that he would have won by stoppage but it is what it is.

 

Yeah I can definitely agree. Douglas as evidenced by his fight with Holyfield just didn't have it in him for a repeat performance of his Tokyo form. Put Tyson in that ring in place of Evander and he would have won. (Holyfield fought a good fight but Buster was very poor.)

I am a bit undecided about the whole prison thing to be honest. In my opinion, stylistically he had regressed long before that, going back to when Rooney got dismissed. He was still in his prime pysically, but the rot had set in, in other areas.

Prison did him no favours, but I thought physically he was in awesome shape against Bruno in the second fight. But he had precious little fight time by the time he fought Holyfield. His fights were all too easy and far too brief.

One thing that surprised me in the Holyfield fight, besides how good Holyfield still was, was that his hands actually seemed faster than Tyson's. It was clearly a factor in the fight.

But yeah, his second career promised much initially but fizzled out after the two Holyfield fights.

 

I agree with this. Tyson's form had clearly diminished considerably by Tokyo and it was evident in the Razor Ruddock fights too. He had already regressed to a single-punch headhunter with little head movement or evasiveness.

 

So figuring Tyson out means they survive the early rounds? So I guess everyone who wasn't ko'd within, what, 2 rounds?...survived Mike Tyson? That would mean Mike Jameson, Steve Zouski, Jesse Ferguson, James Tillis, Mitch Green, Jose Ribalta, Bonecrusher, Thomas, Tucker, Biggs, Holmes, Bruno, Ruddock...despite losing to Mike Tyson, figured Tyson out?

Again, who is suggesting this? Personally, I think Tyson is the best heavyweight on a Head 2 Head basis, meaning on any given night you take Tyson at his best and match him with anyone else at their best and Tyson would at least be even money or better. I have yet to see a realistic argument to sway my opinion. Louis, Liston, Ali, Foreman, Holmes, Holyfield, Bowe, Lewis and Vitali are guys that could beat Mike in a prime for prime battle, I just wouldn't favor them.

This is absolutely absurd. Even the remote Tyson hater can't believe this. Prove EVERYBODY wrong, and you right, by comparing opponents and their records. Go ahead...I got nothing to do and all day to do it.

Tyson burned bright very quickly. His rise to the top was just as swift as his fall from grace. But there are many factors involved here. One, Tyson was a workaholic. Even Holyfield marveled at Tyson's work ethic and dedication. Once he got rid of Rooney his work ethic became stagnant. Two, I would say his prime started after winning the title from Berbick and somewhere between the Bonecrusher and Thomas fights. He was still learning and by the Spinks fight in mid 1988 he had peaked, but only because of the massive layoff, problems outside the ring and the dismantling of the original Team Tyson was he never the same again. So despite having a short fighting prime of 2 years, his prime age wise was taken away from him in prison. How is that a myth? If you were around at the time you'd see that these events unfolded exactly how I described them.

Fair enough. So which ATG's beat him, and why?

When has jabbing and grabbing been a formula to beat Tyson? Can you give me examples of fighters who have used this strategy as a successful means to stopping Mike Tyson? What does Povetkin and Fury have that give them a decent chance? Do they jab abd grab as well? You post fighters who have a "chance" to beat Mike but you fail to imply how and why. Jab and grab? If that's all it takes to beat Mike Tyson than we've been fooled all along, by this so called Tyson myth.

I said that he had better resume than Wilder but not by much. You stressed how Tyson was 35-0 as if this means anything in discussing Tyson vs ATGs of boxing. Tyson has no great win on his resume and lost to first truly elite opponent he faced. He was also beaten by a nobody Buster Douglas before that.

That's a fact and you can't ignore it. I never said he wasn't a good boxer, but if you compare him to the true greats of boxing he doesn't even deserve to be put in the same sentence.

Who cares? Another wasted potential. The fact is that even in his short prime he wasn't nearly as good as his ridiculous hype suggests.

Which ATGs don't beat him is a better question. The only valid argument for Tyson is that he trained in a more modern era and would have size advantage over many ATGs of the past.

There are millions of ways to beat Tyson. He never beat anyone who's ATG material in his prime. Povetkin would shatter that pathetic chin to pieces. I don't think Tyson could find a way past Pulev's jab to be honest, yet alone offer anything to Wlad.

 

Stop being ridiculous.

Tyson at 35-0 had beaten 7 top 10 ranked contenders and unified all the belts. Wilder right now has beaten 1 top 10 fighter and has one belt. They're not even in the same stratosphere in terms of resume.

Pulev is terrible. He's wide open and has no legs. The guy would be a sitting duck for Tyson.
