There hasn’t been enough money minted to persuade Jones to fight somebody like Louis, and he would not have fought Conn at light heavyweight, if there was any other belt that he could go for at that weigh!

Except of course that he would probably agree to it now, for a handful of lose change!

Could? Yes. Would he have? Yes. Man liked jockstraps.

People are belittling Jones' win at heavyweight, while Conn's best win at that weight was over Lee Savold who was seen a 5-to-1 underdog with some bettors prior to the fight, 3-to-1 with others, so little did people think of Savold despite his record.

    Really?

What do you think Jones would have seen in Conn, that would have scared him off?

He also beat Bob Pastror. I think there best wins at heavyweight are sort of comparable, but Conn had several fights there and established himself as the top contender whereas Jones only had one fight.

As to how Jones would have done vs Louis I think he might have been able to pity pat punch and run for quite some time. Problem is that he can’t afford to trade with Louis at all. Sometime in a 15 round fight this is bound to cost him.

Ok, so Conn was only a 11-to-5 favorite over Pastor, both considered to be incapable "to break a window with brass knucks" (unless we are talking about low blows Conn used to win that bout), and both were about the same size. Pastor was just another bum of the month for Louis a year before.

Yes, and Jones was a 9-5 favorite over Ruiz, so what's your point about posting the odds? Jones and Conn's achievements at light heavy made the favorites over many heavyweight, so what?

Pastor wasn't a bum, neither was Ruiz for that matter. They were both capable contenders. The point I've made was this: Conn had more fights at heavyweight and beat a fair number of ranked fighters there, Jones only had one fight. So Conn has a better resume at the weight.

As I've already stated, I think Jones could very well equal Conn's success against Louis on a good night.

Conn beat far poorer heavyweights than Jones had in one fight. It wasn't Conn's achievements at lhw that made him the favorite, it was how poor the heavyweights he faced were.
Louis was a 8-to-1 favorite over Pastor. Pastor was a bum.

"Pastor was a bum" is not a reasonable statement.

It's not my invention to call them bum of the month club.

You know enough to know that that label doesn't equate to any of the fighters in question being bums. Some of them probably were; Pastor wasn't one of them. He was a highly ranked heavyweight stopped just twice in his career who cobbled together more than fifty wins despite having a dearth of power. He was a superb boxer.

True. But I take it you also think that Roy Jones had opposition so bad that it was worth boycotting?
