I like SRL resume... my only issue is... I'm looking for guys who thoroughly outbox their foes, and have the quality of foes they outboxed like the ones listed. Problem with SRL... He didn't really outbox Hearns, he was mostly outboxed. The Benitez fight was really one sided at all. Though I do feel it could be ****ogous to Pea vs. Chavez. I like the Hagler win, but again, did he really outbox Hagler the way Pea outboxed the foes listed? I choose McGirt 2 because I thought Pea was more determined that fight. He seemed bothered by people thinking it was closer than it was, and the bum shoulder etc etc. IMO his display in fight no. 2 was beautiful.
You don't get more outboxed than when Kalambay defeated McCallum. He also outboxed another great boxer in Herol Graham, as well as Steve Collins. SRL-Benitez is also a strange one. History seems to have remembered that fight as being close, when actually Wilfred was hideously outboxed.
I do see your point but Benitez, Duran, Hearns, and Hagler are way better than the guys Whitaker fought. As for McGirt II? McGirt was pretty much done at that point. His best win after this point was a decision over Buck Smith for God's sake. Roger Mayweather dropped him and won about 4 rounds. Ramirez did better than people remember. I'm not saying he deserved the decision, but he wasn't dominated. Greg Haugen was a glorified club fighter. Freddie Pendleton won 4 or 5 rounds. Azumah Nelson hurt Whitaker and won 5 rounds. Jorge Paez did better than expected, I gave him about 4 rounds. As you can see I wasn't a real big Whitaker fan.
I don't like to criticise people's scoring because it's not an exact science, but surely you're joking Hookie? You didn't score Whitaker-Nelson 7-5.
Yes and people seem to remember Leonard getting soundly outboxed in his first bout with Hearns when it was close IMO.
Do you see a recurring theme here? Leonard's appeal crossed over to such a degree that I think the hardcore crowd may resent him a tad. He can scarcely get credit for beating Hagler today when the mere thought of that ever happening in '87 was laughable. But speculation aside, Leonard conclusively outboxed Benitez in every imaginable way. I could only give Wilfred 2-3 rounds. Now if you're outboxing a man of Benitez's calibre without any significant advantages in size then that basically means you were a stud. Ray Leonard was every bit as good as advertised. And contrary to popular opinion here, he proved that in the ring on more than one occasion. I've seldom seen a better performance if I'm being truthful.
Total misconception. He lost rounds and even some of the rounds he won were close. To each their own but I think he got credit for doing nothing sometimes... same goes for Roy Jones Jr. and Floyd Mayweather Jr. How can you be winning when you are just covering up or moving away or just trying to look flashy. In a situation where very little or no punches are landed and one guy is moving forward (throwing punches)... and the other guy is basically just covering up, or making the other guy miss, or showboating, or putting his hands down (or behind his back), or shaking his head no (after he has been hit lol)... so many times the flashier fighter has won rounds like this and I think it's bullshlt!
It's been a long time since I've seen it but I'm pretty sure I had it rather close... like 115-113 (7 rounds to 5). Maybe I'll watch it again and get back with ya.
I look forward to it. As I say, I don't like to question people's scoring usually, but 7-5 seems inexplicably close. I recall Whitaker clearly getting the better of The Professor.
I gave Nelson 2 rounds, maybe. I understand your point though Hookie about SRL and how they were viewed at the time. Especially the Hagler win. The Benitez win is solid, no doubt.
Quality of opposition should mean more than how dominate a guy looked... especially when Leonard beat Benitez, Duran, Hearns, and Hagler. Whitaker beat Chavez (despite what the judges said) and he gave DeLaHoya a tougher than expected fight (could've been a draw). McGirt was damaged goods. He was great at beating bigger slower guys. Nelson had never fought above 130 when he took on Whitaker at 135. It's pretty clear that I really didn't like the guy. He is an all-time great though and I do think he could have beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. by decision.
