He has as much right to call the shots as Canelo has. ZERO!
The WBC calls the shots on this one. The weight (160), the testing (VADA), the deadline (July 20, 2016), unless both parties agree otherwise.

Golovkin is mandatory, and his shot is long overdue. Only in voluntary defences Canelo can call the shots.

 

It's hard to say what their mindset would be like on getting a title.

It's a lot different to go after a title when only one exists rather than the four that exist today. You have to take that into consideration when looking back at any statements they ever made on what they would do for a title or title shot. I doubt they'd be as keen to give into demands if they already held two belts.

I don't think it's Golovkin's fault what's happening to his career. I think the majority of blame should be directed towrads his handlers (K2 promotions.) They had a great shot to take on one of the very best fighters in the world in Ward and I don't think GGG had any problem fighting him. That's what I've gathered from his interviews. HIs team obviously thought otherwise and were persistent on making a CW fight between him and Ward.

All I'll say is Gennady beating Ward would've been exponentially greater than anything he could do at MW, including unifying the division. To be able to beat one of the very best fighters P4P who still has some great years left would've boosted his legacy greatly.

I don't think fighters of today should be compared to the likes of Marvin Hagler. THAT guy was a fighter first and foremost, although I will say once he won the title over Minter, he started looking for big money fights which just so happened to be the best available talent around (i.e. Leonard, Hearns, Duran.) But before he won the title, he had no problems fighting anyone in any venue; this guy had to cross the pond to get his 2nd title shot and made sure he didn't leave it to the refs to rob him like they did in his first title shot.

Marvelous Hagler is an ATG, Gennady is not on that level.

Over the last few years, Andre hasn't been in any position to take on a big fight.

I think it's extremely naive for people to think that the proposed CW stopped the fight from happening. People (not yourself) act as though if GG hadn't have proposed it, the fight would definitely have happened. But in the real world, Andre would have needed at least a few tune ups, and he'd have struggled making 168 because he'd been out for so long.

 

K2 putting GGG in with Ward would possibly have been a career ending move. One of the worst decisions that could have been made in boxing. For arguments sake Ward is an equally skilled fighter but at the same time two divisions heavier. At the time of the "negotiations" everyone already had the suspicion that Ward was too big for 168. There would be zero point in even trying to make the fight when you had a ton of better fights to be made for GGG. Not that either side actually wanted the fight anyway.

 

How is Golovkin the challenger?

Everyone knows that Golovkin is the legitimate champion at middleweight.

It's a unification.

If Canelo holds a middleweight belt then he should be prepared to defend it at middleweight and the middleweight limit is 160.

It means nothing.

If being lineal middleweight champ has any value then take on all comers within the middleweight limit.
