Has Floyd Mayweather ever had a signature win?

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by Captin_Comandor, Apr 14, 2016.

  1. All the greats have had them beating guys who you did not expect them to win or even just beating a great fighter in his prime

    Has he?

The closest i can think of is hatton who to be honest was a legit 140 fighter and was not really a 147 fighter he brought him up in weight.

    Thoughts?

Canelo hadn't reached prime, still had a lot of learning to do, but he was a young and hungry junior middleweight, bigger than Mayweather.
I'd classify that fight as his signature fight with the Hatton fight coming a close second.

The only reason why I wouldn't rate the Hatton fight ahead of Canelo's was that Hatton was a punch or two from getting knocked out by Luis Collazo right before facing Mayweather.
I think that fight for Hatton kind of softened him up for Floyd to take him out.

There's the Corrales fight, but I rate Canelo and Hatton as much better fighters than Chico Corrales.

Castillo is in the mention as well, but Mayweather was supposed to beat him handily but stuggled against what I think is a poor man's version of Julio Cesar Chavez.

  3. canelo lol:lol:

even a past it mosley gave him a good fight

Mayweather has not got a marqee win

Really, then why did he win another title at 130 in 2004, 3 years after the Mayweather fight. Did he become undrained?

Corrales only. Floyd is a sublime boxer, he makes it look effortless. Look at the Pac fight. People aren't going to remember that fight because it wasn't a contest. It was a one-sided win with the loser left to make excuses.

Corales, Castillo, Hoya, Alvarez, Hatton, Pacquiao etc???

There is no one who has shared a division with Floyd who he wouldn't be favorite over, so if that's the criteria maybe none.

Floyd Mayweather vs Diego Corrales was Floyds greatest win, both guys were at their Undefeated prime

    Undefeated Champion vs Undefeated Champion.

This fight had even odds & was about the only fight that had many people feel Floyd will lose (the casuals favored Chico KO, while mainstream boxing was split evenly), 5 knockdowns later Mayweather shocked the world...The fight left a deep mental scar in Deigo Corrales, he was really surprised how a smaller man was able to stop him (in reality Floyd 72" reach gave him a 2" reach advantage, that was optimized with Floyd perfect boxing & then full fast reflexes)

    Floyd 2020 Reach + Skills > Height
    Floyd 2010 Reach + Skills + Speed > Height
    Floyd 2000 Reach + Skills + Speed +Reflexes > Height

Drained = Excuse used by big guys who mastered the art of cutting weight, it becomes used as a psychological comforting excuse when they get beat by a smaller guy :conf

Floyd vs Canelo wasn’t a signature win because of Floyd’s need to drain Canelo with a catchweight and because the result was controversial. (Close Majority Decision, not Unanimous, no knockdowns, not many punches landed by either fighter)

Hatton was Floyd’s signature win. Hatton was in trouble vs Collazo and barely won that fight, in fact many thought he lost it, but still Floyd did what he had to do and Hatton was undefeated, so that’s definetly a signature win for Floyd. It was a clear, decisive win. Hatton was more explosive at 140 than he was at 147, and I think that contributed to his struggles vs Collazo.

Canelo and Hatton are / were better fighters than Corrales. Canelo would have been a signature win for Floyd had he legit beat Canelo. But when you make someone unhealthy by attempting to drain then, then struggle to eek out a majority decision in a fight with no knockdowns, that’s not a signature win.

Hatton was a signature win though for Floyd. There was nothing you could criticize Floyd for in that fight. He did the business, he knocked out an undefeated dude and it was one of the best Floyd performances ever. Ya can’t hate on Floyd for that.
