We all know Calzaghe's style, he hits very fast in flurries of punches. Bt I remember a time, maybe Byron Mitchell thinking he was very fast and also a tremendous puncher. What happened to him against Hopkins, still had him winning fairly, but hes lost power. Does he compensate power for speed, cos we all know power is the last thing to go. Or is he not right for light heavy?
I think his power has gone slightly down the years so he compensates by training for stamina+volume of punches.
Enzo Calzaghe's fighters dont use weights, so perhaps after Joe has hit his natural physical peak (30?) he is always going to have less power thereafter because of this.
that explains it all. he even admits it in interviews that he has to compensate for it. watch his early fights. he was a genuine power power. :bbb
Its a real shame, cos he didnt really hurt Hopkins the flush punches were good an all, but no real effects. If he had the power b ut still landed in the same way the detractos would have had less of an arguement.
Calzaghe doesnt put full power behind the head shots anymore, injuries are the main his career had so many stops and starts. He does dig a bit to the body though, he is a good inside worker and does a lot fo body work, I think thats where he targets his more powerful punches.
That is a very good point actually; you may be right. Calzaghe certainly had power earlier in his career but his punches certainly looked powder puff / pitter patter against Hopkins. I'd take Calzaghe's flurries over one punch power (e.g. Nigel Benn) though.
He does not have serious power. He has NEVER had serious power. He beat Mitchell by accumilation. Period. He landed like a million clean punches. If he had power Mitchell would of been ended in his first barrage of clean power shots.
