It's not overrated please, the problem is that it is talked so much, so much, that we, ****ing hardcore fanatics, get bored with the repetitive talk since there are many other great fights out there between less famous guys you know. Hagler vs Hearns is mainstream.
Part of it's greatness is that you had two great fighters (possibly the two best P4P at that exact time) in incredible form going hell for leather chasing immortality. The calibre of fighter, the career timing, the build up. Hearns had the unforgettable KO of Duran a year previous, Hagler a couple of fine stoppages. Both thought they were invincible. How often do these superfights fail miserably to support the hype? Great fighters, great little fight, utterly electric atmosphere.
I never knew anyone mentioned it as the benchmark for great boxing. It IS a great fight. And I assume people like it because it's relatively short. It's about 10 minutes long, including the minute rest breaks. It has aestheic appeal : Two contrasting styles. Two contrasting physiques. Two men in tip top shape. They came to fight. Shaved head v. Jheri curl.
At the time it was an incredible EVENT. I personally could not justify picking either guy to win going in. Both were on impressive runs. There was a ton of excitement in the buildup. When it finally happened and Hagler won so quickly in a fight that was so exciting, it was water-cooler conversation for days. And Hagler's next-morning pizza commercial ("the other guy is eating soup.") was icing on the cake.
It served Hearns right for cheating. He could've blinded Hagler with Jheri Curl juice. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
