What you say is true but Holyfield took a lot of big body shots from Lewis without visible effect,he was 41 when he fought Toney ,hardly prime.
Yet it was Holyfield who lost the third Bowe fight because he couldn't throw a punch anymore (too much steroids or weight lifting). He tired pretty badly in their first fight too. Marciano never did, though to be fair, he didn't fight such big opponents of world class level.
alot of people forget that rocky was one lucky SOB who lived off his unfair tactics. would he have to fight within the rules he would be alot less effective.
Interestingly enough, people say the same about Holyfield. This is a bad matchup for Holyfield but would still be a great fight.
I know but Evander was having stamina and suposed heart trouble during the Moorer fight and Bean fights and struggled with Bowe (understandable)and ran out of gas in the last fight....Toney went heavy to the body and Evander went....I dont think E.H. had any weaknesses and he was always in condition, he may have overtrained in some of those fights
Holyfield on steroids KO's Marciano by mid-fight. Holyfield without steroids (whom no one has ever seen) doesn't survive the 2nd round.
He was so far past his prime for the Toney fight he couldn't see it with a telescope. I'd take Marciano to win whatever version of Holyfield turned up. I could see a prime Holyfield lasting 12 painful rounds with the Rock, but not 15.
Holyfield always thrived against aggressive fighters. So Marciano's style would suit him. Holyfield would counter well, and enjoy the pressure Rocky brings. Marciano was a brutal punching piece of iron though, an immovable object. A wrecking ball.
WRONG! That might make him one of the top 3 most concussive punching fighters of all time, but powerful? Nope ... Foreman, Shavers, Liston, Lewis, Tyson, Tua and others all hit harder, IMO. I think Armstrong, Sal Sanchez and others of that ilk might challenge him for the best stamina ... Sal rarely breathed heavy in between rounds and Armstrong's workrate was more impressive than Rocky's, IMO. Marciano had good punching speed, emphasised even more by the short distance his punches travelled when he was in range cos of his relatively short reach, but he did not have great punching speed. Louis, Tyson, Ali, Patterson - they had great punching speed ... Marciano was not in their company. Marciano showed a good chin but there is an unknown factor in his durability. He never faced a great superheavyweight puncher ... as to how his chin would hold up under the power of a Lewis, we can merely speculate ... with Evander, we know, it's proven. Consistency, there is no comparison. Ranking as an ATG, IMO, there is no comparison. As a warrior, there is plenty of comparison, iron will, plenty of comparison ... ability to impress with wins that they shouldn't achieve - Holyfield impressed me more with his wins over Bowe and Tyson. That said, there's serious speculation as to how much artificial help Evan Fields has had in his career ... if it is proven, I will cease to even rank the man as a fighter. I don't in any way think that Marciano would simply have his way with Holyfield ... Holyfield is the type of H2H monster where his intangiables and willingness to walk through physical hell make him a live challenge for almost any other ATG. I cannot see Marciano dominating Holyfield, who I think was stronger, on the scorecards ... Holyfield was skilled enough to outbox him and could hold his own in a brawl ... yet, it was in brawl mode that he lost his gameplan and fought to his own disadvantage (re: Bowe I) when he got left hook happy. I suspect that this hypothetical would be much closer than you indicate.
If Marciano fought a prime Cruiserweight Champion Holyfield, he would have a tough time because of Evanders speed. A Holy at 215 could rought him up. Either way, I think Holy wins.
I haven't seen to much of Holy as a cruiserweight, but this version might have a better chance. I think he must try to stay on the outside as much as possible. If he starts trading (as the later version of Holyfield probably would) I think Marciano wins it in the end, especially over 15. Bulked up Holyfield would probably trade, and even if he had good strength and power, his work-rate and stamina isn't good enough to keep up with Rocky IMO.
Great work, Meta. Especially telling is the differentiation you make between HW stamina and stamina in the lower weights. There is no comparison. None. Bigger men have more to carry and their bodies must work harder. Put them in the conditions that Duran and DeJesus faced in 74, and see a decrease of about 60% punch output and clinch parties erupt every round. I must put a gun to your head now. Pick one and apply the winning strategy. I'll follow suit.
the stuff holyfield did was borderline illegal. sure, he came in with his head, but that was mostly after coming in after a punch. his style was very rough........but not nearly as dirty as marcianos.
I think some people are eluding the question of the thread........ "can evander outrocky rocky?" The answer is no, he cannot.
Tua never put a person in a comma, I think the Rock hits harder than Foreman, Shavers, Lewis, Tyson, Tua, Non of these guys never relly put some one OUT like Marciano did to Layne and Walcott. Tyson would ko some one, and that is what I call a flash ko, the speed gets in, takes the guy out, and there find a min or so later after the ten count. (Spinks, and others of couse) Not Marciano, most often after the ko punch, it took a while for them to get up.
