How famous is Sergey Kovalev in Russia ?

He is pretty big in Russia, news with him get picked up quickly. People are very excited about his homecoming but many show a sentiment that a better opponent, I. E. Stevenson, would have been in order.

 

I don't know, but I have a feeling Povetkin is far more famous and popular. Kovalev should probably drop Duva and sign up with Ryabinski, so he can stop fighting for peanuts and cab fare.

 

Could the difference be because Povetkin is still based in Russia whereas Kovalev has moved to the US?

 

Less famous than George Bush in Wales, but more 'popular' than Nathan Cleverly in the White House.

He is only popular amongst hardcore boxing fans. His profile amongst casual fans is low. Guys like Povetkin and Lebedev have been fighting in Russia on the main TV network for years, and also played the whole patriotic, Russia loving, Putin ass kissing card, which does wonders for your TV exposure there. Kovalev has never done that and hopefully never will

 

Considering that

1- boxing isn't a popular sport in Russia

and

2- Kovalev hardly lives there anymore, he's always in America

and

3- Kovalev left Russia because he was totally unknown and nobody cared to sign him a contract, he had to fight several times for free even after leaving


I'd guess Kovalev is almost unknown in Russia, outside the few people deeply interested in the sport

 

nah he is well known. Not as well known as Povetkin on the account of Sasha being a decorated amateur, but he is known enough to be recognized on the street.

 

Bad management is the main reason. GGG is also located in the US, but he's basically a national hero in his home country.

Kovalev having a fight in Russia is a step in the right direction though.

He should be considering the popularity that Kostya Tszyu had in Russia after he became an Australian citizen and never fought in Russia. It may come later.

 

He was born in the Soviet Union, and he speaks Russian better than 95% of Russians. He should be famous in Russia, but he's unknown.

 

He is not! He's a citizen of Kazakhstan, but an ethnic Russian (Kazakh implies an ethnic Kazakh). There are several ethnic groups in Kazakhstan, as there are in Canada.
