...is because of many dumb boxing fans who're calling every fighter who has some losses here and there "bum". And then you wonder why majority of boxers rather smash cans than risk getting an L.

You criticize people who GGG beat because most of them weren't undefeated. For example... Lemieux? "Rubio's leftover". Rubio? 6 losses = bum. Gaele? Lost to Barker and Mundine. Etc etc

I don't get this attitude. It's a sport, you're fighting other elite athletes who have trained all their lives and you're can't possibly be 100% fit in every fight, it's natural to lose. Yet people bash every fighter after losing to someone who's not elite.

This is the mentality of a modern boxing fan especially in the era of the internet when everyone thinks that he's a great expert and it's modern to bash athletes.

The reason why the best fight the best in the UFC is because MMA fans are more forgiving when fighters lose and guys with 16-10 records like BJ Penn are considered legends of the sport. Mark Hunt is 12-10-1 and is considered elite.

Another reason is that boxing fans buy BS
PPV fights like Canelo vs Khan signaling
that these sort of fights are ok.

When PPVs start tanking, they'll try to make better fights

There was a thread about should we even refer to boxers as bums ever.

I agree, this attitude should stop. All it achieves is lowering the quality of matchups in the future.

Any fight, even at semi-pro level, the guys are risking their lives.

Words like bum should be reserved for when it is CLEAR boxers and promotions are NOT making fights that should happen.

I think a lot of this is due to those boxers not being promoted and hyped correctly. In the UFC you have Joe Rogan hyping every "bum" as the next big thing, they can get people interested in the MMA equivalent of Rubio, Gaele, Macklin... Those kind of fighters get their fans in MMA and are more respected. But in boxing it's extremely top-heavy, you have like 10 elite guys who have their fanbase and everyone else is largely ignored or underrated.

Yeah, using the term 'bum' in boxing cheapens our sport to the casuals who read our posts or listen to our conversations. Not cool. But I'm all about talking trash about promoters who are too scared to lose their cash cows, and thereby avoid meaningful fights.

King Canelo-Khan is light years more worthy of PPV than triple B side-Lemieux was. Triple B side-Lemieux PPV was a cruel joke and the numbers back this up.

The problem with Canelo/Khan is that most think its a huge miss match or not realistically competitive.

As a match up - it does interest me, can Khan prove us wrong? Its a gutsy move from him and its intriguing. I think it will be exciting either way.

The issue is, it comes at a cost of a VERY competitive match, and an in demand title fight for the WBC Middleweight.

Adding insult to injury in that the GGG fight isnt made so that Canelo can again fight not at his Championship held belt weight class.

Triple B side-Lemieux didn't interest me and it should have been on regular HBO and the numbers prove me right. Who's Lemieux who has he ever beat? It was always going to be a mismatch because to be honest Lemieux is a C level fighter, atleast Khan is worldclass.

Well look. Now you are making my point for me.

Let's say GGG has only had fights with low level easy work guys. And lets say for arguments sake I agree.

So who won't be easy work?

What would be a good fight testing him? Canelo? Yes? Then that is an exciting fight.

Boxers are promoted by pure business men these days. The days where Boxers go through their career testing themselves to try to prove how good they are are well and truly behind us. Boxers are now guided through their careers in a way that generates most money, pride and passion and putting your world ranking or title at risk is frowned upon as they lead to bad business decisions.

Im starting to sounds like a Floyd Mayweather press conference. In other sports to be the best you have to face the best. Not in Boxing.

A "bum" to me is someone who no longer has the passion for the sport, not someone who sucks or isn't elite. But I agree with OP.
