Joe Louis vs Max Schmeling 2 on PPV. High tech arrives in 1938, with Mike Jacobs and Joseph Goebbels handling the promotional duties. FDR holds a few fireside chats, and ABitler fumes behind closed doors during the buildup. Louis & Schmeling go on countrywide promotional tours, with staged press conferences. How many "buys"... by 2016 standards ? (And Mayweather said recently he wants a "9 figure" guarantee to "come out of retirement"... to put things in proper financial & significance perspective).
That was more than just another fight...the political and racial undertones would draw in people that dont even care about the sport. I honestly think 20-30 million buys wouldn't be out of question.
It would have broken all records. As PS says, it would have been bought by people with no interest in boxing. Other fights that would have drawn ridiculously high PPVs include Cribb Molineux II, and Johnson Jeffries.
Supposedly Dempsey vs Carpentier was international interest too....even though many thought it was a "mismatch" pre-fight. (And of course we don't have sham mis-match PPV's these days either).
there would be massive amount of buys that put that rat Mayweather in the shade but even still it would be less popular than the original and way less people taking part. EVERYONE was out there ears pinned to the radio... PPV is a disgusting greedy concept
It depends where you lived. If you live in Austria your country is already occupied, and if you live anywhere else in Europe, you are acutely aware that trouble is brewing. Living in the United States, you probably dont expect your country to get dragged into it at this stage.
