Which fights were the most hyped but didn't live up to expectations ?

Floyd vs Pacquaio clearly was the biggest let down in recent Boxing memory. Thanks to Floyd it happened years too late and Floyd got the big gift of making sure Manny had to fight injured and in pain. No doubt on Peds too.

Bit like Tyson vs Lewis. By the time they faced one was a just a former shell of his former self. The fight of all fights happened way too late.

floyd-pac is the worst due to being top atg's in very close size with different fighting styles who were both recognized at the top pound for pound and was hyped to make the most money in the sport's history.

 

For me Wladschko vs Haype.

I had booked an hotel and travelled to Germany for it. Only to see one guy run, flop and blame his pinky toe, while the other was satisfied just winning round after round without doing much.

Worst thing was, it was only 14ºC, it rained cats and dogs while the front rows and ringside seats were getting soaked. While the British admosphere was all but gone after 4 rounds, knowing Haye was there for a paycheck and not getting KO'd.

 

I wasn't aware that you couldn't come to fight if you out work and out land your opponent. How does that happen?

Besides Floyd-Pac, I'd say I was actually pretty disappointed by how Canelo-Cotto turned out.

Some of the biggest stinkers have been recent ones, but you'd expect that given the explosion of social media in the last 5yrs alone.

In terms of sheer numbers of threads, posts, column inches, fan girls getting wild (in both directions), interviews and airtime ... It is a no brainer. You have to say 'the biggest fight of all time' between Pac/May was also the biggest letdown. Mayweather schooled Manny, but the contest was devoid of any explosivity and was a dud, clash of styles meant the whole thing was a squib. After literally years of hysterical argumentative build-up? This one has to stand alone in the annals of let-down, and by some way.

Haye/Klitchko was certainly a dud too. But there's something more forgiveable about that in the heavyweight division. It's natural for a small, explosive heavyweight who is packing China to try to cat-and-mouse his way to landing a bomb. In this case? He couldn't get close enough and it just didn't happen. A letdown for sure.

In the UK there was recently the Quigg/Frampton fight. Another one where the script suggested a proper tear-up. Many thousands of posts and threads and tv hours and interviews suggested a 'huge event'.... Instead we had two fighters both of whom froze and underperformed and an unsatisfying night where both fighters came out of the whole thing looking average and made sure that no casual will ever again pay to watch them fight.

I personally would include Tyson Fury on this list. He (the person) is entertaining and the press conferences and so on are excellent. But in the ring, I don't care if he beat a 40 yr old Klitchko, I'm more struck by the dull manner in which he did it. I'm not sure I even care if it was in some way a technical triumph, it was boring, nobody looked close to hurting the other, and there wasn't the slightest hint of 'fireworks'. I actually think Klitchko (an old version) had a bad night, against someone big and awkward, with, as I found out recently, a wife who was really quite ill for much of his camp must have been a very serious distraction. I see a reversal in July.

 

DeLaHoya vs Mayweather was pretty terrible.
Mayweather vs Pacquiao sucked beyond belief with the roided up guy being terrified to engage against a smaller one-armed opponent.
Klitschko vs Haye was a snoozer both men scared to do anything.
Maywether vs Canelo was pathetic; this was all Canelo's fault as it seemed no one told him that his opponent is allowed to move out of the way.
Lewis vs Tyson. Tyson lost his heart in round one when Lewis hit him with a hard uppercut.

 

Leonard v Hagler was a letdown also.

 

I don't know why Mayweather-Pacquiao was such a letdown to you guys. I understand if casual fans moan about it but hardcore boxing fans should expect nothing else from that fight. The fight went exactly like the vast majority of boxing fans who weren't emotionally invested in it predicted it will go.

You had to be extremely naive if you expected that Floyd will engage Pacman or that past his prime Pacquiao would somehow KO Floyd. Obviously there was a remote possibility that something interesting will happen but you can't say that it's a letdown when something that had like 1% chance of happening didn't happen.

Same goes for Haye vs Klitschko, I don't know why people expected it will be competitive. Haye had nothing for that version of Klitschko and only had massive hype behind him for some reason than wasn't based on anything reasonable.

 

I think people were hoping for some excitement and both failed to deliver. Especially May/Pac - this was by some way the most hyped and talked about fight I've ever seen. I don't think anyone would have too much to say if there had been even 20% of the buildup and fan-girl antics (and even 20% would still make top ten of all time)... but given the hysterical buildup you simply have to have this fight as a huge letdown.

Academically, did I (for example) think it would be a bit of a technical mayweather-esque snooze-a-thon? Yes... but it was still a huge let down.

 

I loved fmj technical brilliance while making pac look like a club fighter. Fmj showed what atg's,to do pumped up "fast" and "powerful" fighters look like.

A fighter made tge B fighter look likr a D fighter. That surpased my expectations, i thought pac would make ita close tough fight.

All it proved once again that there are levels to this **** and DEFENSE always wins xhampionships.
