Both men have the characteristics to trouble each other greatly. Floyd is long and controls the range very well, he will back peddle the whole fight and look to land three to four precise shots a round. Duran would pressure and take the fight to Floyd, he would work to get on the inside and score on mayweather. Durand inside game is superior to Floyds so if he is able to cut the ring effectively i see him causing mayweather a lot of trouble. People also forget Duran was just a bull rushing at the sight of red, he was a calculated fighter and I see him getting under Floyd jab throughout the fight, and landing his own sneaky right on mayweather giving him a rate of his own medicine. If Floyd has his way, Bayless would be reffing and turn it into an amateur bout, leading to a points decision in favour of Floyd. If both men are allowed to fight I lean towards a Duran victory, out landing and out throwing a very negative Floyd mayweather. Let's be honest though, Floyd wouldn't fight this version of Duran as he would claim he doesn't make enough money and then perhaps retire only to come out of it once he sees the Benitez fight.
If you don't know about Dejesus or that he was very good and criminally underrated, maybe you should discuss such things. The simple reality is this. Mayweather style is particularly vulnerable to a fighter like Duran. May simply isn't busy enough, and Duran isn't just going to stay and range and try and box him all night. He's going to pressure him, put a hurt on his body, and generally out work him. Flyod can do nothing to keep Duran off of him. Castillo was able to, and beat Floyd that first fight, Duran is even better and more viscous. How exactly does Floyd win here? Do tell
So it's the moron routine today eh? Show me a fight where May fought like SRL v. Duran 2. Which fight of his does he do that?
What started out as evaluating a hypothetical match up between Mayweather and Duran seems to have turned into a referendum on both fighters. Duran clearly wins that debate as even the most diehard Mayweather fans usually don't rank Mayweather over Duran. As far as this fight goes l really can't see what Mayweather could have done that SRL couldn't. Make no mistake about it, even SRL said flat out that Duran dictated this fight. And SRL probably had equal or more power in his punches than even Duran has. Mayweather is known to have brittle hands and l just don't think he has the tools to keep Duran from mauling him to either a lopsided decision or even a TKO.
Yes l alway choose hypothetical match ups based on one fight. And it's not even the match the thread is about.
Floyd could win just like Benitez did. Leonard fought the first fight in a way that was unlike Mayweather. He switched to tactics closer to Mayweayher's in the second fight and had lots more success. If we're talking about the faded guy who showed up for Maidana, Duran would win. Saying DeJesus was near Marquez-level is in no way underrating him. Marquez has a better resume and is an undisputed ATG. DeJesus isn't.
It happened once in his first 72 fights. Not many fighters get to 72 fights. If Marvin Hagler fought another 8 years he would have racked up a number of losses. Like Holmes, like SRL, like most boxers that ever lived - like Duran. Tho he was around 30 going into the SRL rematch he basically had a career behind him. I don't give him a free pass for losses soonish thereafter but i do take them in context. It was from memory Bob Arum that put stock into him even after the Laing and Benitez affairs, believing he still had it if he could get dedicated. He knew the fire in his belly was more the problem than badly dimished skills and wear and tear because he had just never taken that much punishment. Turned out he was right, he had obviously aged and lost a bit (especially fighting bigger guys) but still had some good showings left in him.
Subtract the bums from his first 73 fights and it's not as special looking. He was peppering bums in between meaningful fights even as a champion. There's no shame in doing that if you just want to stay active, but it's not impressive either.
Mayweather never dared to enter a paradigm that offers him an opportunity to quit in the first place. He didn't dare to be one of the very greatest.
People can choose who they think is better between Duran and Mayweather and if the choose the later, I don`t have a problem with that. BUT, Duran dared to lose, Mayweather never, that to me is the key difference. Want proof. Duran was the underdog in the following fights. SRL 1, Benitez, Hagler, Moore, Barkley, Hearns, and he was 3-3 in these bouts. Hell Duran wasn`t even the favorite in the SRL rematch, 6-5 (leonard). Let`s see a list of fights in which Mayweather was the underdog and we`re likely to get cricket chirps.
I respect Mayweather`s talent and what he`s done in his era. It`s just that Duran was able to win World Titles in 4 weight classes in an era that greater fighters were around. Yes he lost some fights as he moved up weight classes but it was just a much tougher era. Montreal Duran is bull****. Roberto Duran was that way the entire decade of the `70s. He brought that intensity and non stop aggression. A tiger with skills. The last thing Mayweather would want to deal with.
Agreed. Prior to hitting his 30`s that was just who he was. Even afterwards, when in shape, that remained who he was.
