I think ward would win in an ugly fight. Toney wouldn't be able to find his range with ward, and that's the deciding factor in a bout between two methodical fighters. Discuss. :hat
The problem with this question is that Andre Ward is always Andre Ward. He always comes focused, prepared and in shape. Toney, not so much. If we assume prime, focused and in shape Toney, he makes easy work of Ward. The other version of Toney gets outworked and loses a decision.
This is a tough one, Toney was inconsistent back then @168 and Ward is always consistent. Toney doesn't have huge power. 50/50, I'd give Ward the edge on the slightest of margins. Doesn't necessarily mean I'd rate Ward over Tony ATG. Put older Tony's brain, around that period he beat Jirov, Holyfield and Ruiz, in his 168 self and I'd pick him over Ward.
Toney.....no question. By KO....Ward is competitive, but out boxed by the better technical boxer and most natural fighter boxing has produced in the last 50 years. If James only maximized his ability during his prime by dedicating himself to his preparation James could have been top 5 ATG https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Xl50iVr25R8&autoplay=1
Toney beats him up on the inside and wins a decision or maybe even hurts him and stops him. Ward can't bully James around the ring.
A motivated and in shape Toney stops Ward. People see Toney today and have no idea how amazing he was in his prime.
Worst possible match up for Ward. Ward can't outbox Toney and can't beat him on the inside. Possibly gets knocked out.
Ward was always very skillful on the inside which is strange to see as there is never much skill on the inside, he knew how to hit with the free arm and break the tied up arm out and start throwing shots, but Toney was even better on the inside I can't seem to make a prediction for this one
Ward would win easily. He'd move laterally and Toney would constantly be resetting his feet. Some people really DKSAB
