In the mood for some thread starting today! This weekend got me thinking about the fighters whose careers I've called completely wrong and right. I don't mean calling individual fights right/wrong, but their careers as a whole. Got it right: Carl Froch - said pre-Pascal that I thought he would prove himself the best 168lber in the world...I didn't know about Andre Ward at the time, but given most people thought he'd get found out below elite level, I'm happy with this one. Joe Calzaghe - Always believed he just needed the right opposition to prove how good he was, thanks to Jeff Lacy was proven right. Victor Ortiz - Told everyone who would listen that I thought he was gutless. Nobody is gutless in boxing, but you know what I mean. Got it wrong: Kevin Mitchell - was convinced twice (once after Prescott, twice after Murray) that Mitchell would win titles and maybe even at multiple weights. Failed to live the life, get constantly reminded about this bum prediction by mates regularly. John Murray - completely fell for his padded record, couldn't see anything wrong with him as a fighter until Mitchell took him apart. Audley Harrison - hopefully not alone on this one, just fell for the hype. Seemingly had everything but apparently boxing is not the sport for you if you don't like being hit.
No, you're not alone in Audley Harrison. I was convinced after his second Prizefighter win he'd go on and fulfil his #Destiny and become World Champion. I also tipped David Price to become a world champ in 18 months after he made light work of John McDermott. I obviously DKSAB (heavyweights anyway).
Good idea for a thread. Some of mine are tenuous to be honest... Right: Golovkin - I saw him before he got onto UK TV (think Macklin was his first UK appearance?) and remember texting my Dad to remember the name because he is an absolute monster. Gilberto Ramirez - ok, he's only just won a belt I know but I first saw him fighting some no mark and thought I saw enough there to be world level Luke Campbell - he has a long way to go still I know, but I've said from the start he lacked something to make him compete at world level. unless there's a drastic change, that point remains valid Wrong: Mitchell Smith - bags of talent, I genuinely thought he'd be looking at a world title in a couple of years. Tyson Fury - not once did I think he was anything more than a fat bloke who was matched correctly. Now I'm a fully fledged fan girl In fact, my prediction league record will tell you that I'm generally wrong
To be fair, I think Mitchell Smith could still do well now that he's with Adam Booth. As you say, bags of potential and can definitely bang a bit.
Tyson Fury is for me "got right and wrong" - I always thought he had the tools to beat Klitschko, I just thought someone relatively minor would have exposed him before he ever got the shot.
Cool thread Got right kell brook - Was sure he'd win a welterweight world title undefeated after first seeing him smash mcintyre in 1 round. Opponents could be better tho. Tyson Fury - felt he was a lot more skilled than critics and fans were giving him credit for. Was happy when he finally dethroned Klitschko. Wrong George groves - after he beat degale felt he was definitely getting a world title before degale. 2 title fights vs froch and hes not the same fighter. Might not ever win it after the brutal ko Haye - bragged to everyone he was guna beat the klit. Shame on me.
A couple of obscure ones for me but Danny Williams battering Scott Gammer was one I called spot on. Hopkins over DLH I got the round bang on and randomly Ruiz over Golota. Those I got wrong - Pac Hatton. Not so much the result but I recall giving someone on here a rough time when they said Hatton gets stopped early. DLH - Pac was another.
Got Fury massively wrong. I thought he was a well managed flat track bully who'd been fortunate in his rise through the rankings. Turns out he had much more in his locker than I - and perhaps members of his team - thought he had. Never thought Crolla was up to much either. He's proving me wrong one fight at a time. I get a lot more right than wrong - especially when the fighters are foreign. I seem to struggle to identify talent hailing from these shores, Mitchell, Groves and Haye failed to live up to expectations whereas the above fighters were levels above what I thought they were. My estimations of Khan and Harrison were almost bang on though.
Right Pacman to knock DLH out Wrong Thought Khan would outwork Canelo on the outside and last the distance with out that mistake Thought Haye would eventually get to the inside and land the killer blow on Wlad
I have been getting my predictions wrong for years ever since i thought George Collins would beat a less than dedicated Kirkland Laing. Although at the weekend i predicted Khan would get stopped in rounds 6-8. £100 netted me £150 which my wife is investing in clothes.
Fury - thought Del Boy would beat him. Both times .... Haye - thought he would be a breath of fresh air in the HW division Groves - thought he would be a belt holder at 168 Harrison - after the Olympics was sure he would be. HW belt holder if not the champion But was right about Cleverly, Price & Froch in different ways. Also wrong about most of Bhops fights in the past 6 years or so...
Got right GGG - I saw him vs Lajuan Simon and was sold. Kovalev - I saw him vs Lionell Thompson and again was sold Terence Crawford & Viktor Postol Ones I got wrong Fury, I never thought he would get this far. Peter Quillen - I saw him in 2010/11 and I really felt he would go on and be a world class fighter
Right: Carl Froch - thought he would be a real contender, saw him first v Dodson and then Robin Reid, the Pascal win confirmed it for me. Callum Smith - thought from his first 2/3 fights he was going to be a world champion at SMW & LH, still think he will be. Tyson Fury - was always a huge fan and was always impressed by the different performances he put out, whether boxing completely southpaw or working exclusively behind the jab. GGG - can't see how anyone could get this one wrong, to be honest..?! The man is a wrecking ball. Wrong: David Haye - thought he had the tools to beat anyone at HW. He was very good but didn't get to where I thought he would. Adonis Stevenson - I thought he'd go on to be the same as Kovalev/GGG right now, but for one reason or another he's just not fighting anyone. Audley Harrison - similar to others, thought he'd do a lot more. I do believe he had the ability but his heart just wasn't there when it came to a proper fight. David Price - what a punch this man has, but I, along with many others I think, massively over estimated his ability to take a punch. Jury out: George Groves: I thought, and still do, that he is one of the best in the division but he frankly wasted a couple of years working with an amateur trainer. Hopefully he's on the way back as he has looked sharper, albeit against limited opposition, under McGuigan Martin Murray: Perhaps not his fault. I always loved his way of just getting on with it and s****ping through. Thought he beat Martinez and he's had other bum cards, but the jury is out purely given his move to SMW. One of him or Groves will go on to do ok at the weight after their fight but not both. I suspect Groves.
