Who are the fighters who in your opinion were the greatest up to that point. For example if you think Sugar Ray Robinson was the GOAT then sombody else must have held that distinction before him perhpas Henry Armstrong. In turn sombody else must have held that distinction before Armstrong. Trace it back as far as you can.
This is hard Janitor, but i think maybe Greb would be in with a shout for this honour. Ive got that video 'Pound for Pound', and i cant remember who Bert Sugar is quoting, but he said that someone called Greb 'the greatest thing he had ever seen in a ring', and the man had seen both Armstrong and Robinson
Most people only think back as far as the turn of the 20th century when compiling pound for pound lists. George Dixon would have had a prety strong claim to be the GOAT in his own career, and before him perhpas Jem Mace Tom Sayers or Dutch Sam.
Cant say i know much about Mace or Dutch Sam, Dixon from what i know would be in contention here though. Didnt he box more championship rounds than any other??
For the people who agree that Robinson is number 1 right now, can anyone forsee him getting taken over, not imo, just 2 great accomplishment wise and certainly h2h.
You would have to yes, we never seen michael jordan or tiger woods coming did we? I think we will see another boxing icon arrive that cleans up divisions and retires undefeated fighting all the best. I also think that man will need a strong crop of fighters to come through the ranks with him. P.S i know floyd fits most of my criteria so far and its not him.
Yea , i just personally cant see a guy getting widespread acclaim as the number 1 guy ahead of Robinson, maybe at some point it must happen, but people will allways have major problems giving somone that honour imo, as they're always gunna come back to the point on Robinson's busy schedule (which is a thing of the past) to edge it in his favour. That was what i meant. Maybe you're right though, probability says that at some point it may happen
Before this happens the organization of boxing must change radically. Today the top boxers fight to infrequently and faces each other to rarely to put together a comparable record. I mean, Robinson beat greats like Armstrong, Gavilan, LaMotta, Graziano, Basilio and others, put together a winning streak of 99 fights and won the lineal titel at WW and MW half a dozen times, all in all - who could possibly do that considering how fighters are managed today? On second thought, de La Hoya wouldn't have been to far away if he just had won more of his biggest fights. He's faced just about everyone, hasn't he?
yeah if DLH had beaten tito and b hop he would definitely deserve one of the top ATG spots. the only ppl u cud say he ducked were Winky and Vernon. Neither one of which ppl really wanted to see all that much.
Even wins over Tito (which I consider he did) and BHop wouldn't make him the alltime greatest. Probably not even top 20.
