Limited boxing ability I believe, but turned pro at 19 with a limited amateur background and went on to win British, European and WBC Youth world titles. It was well documented by Joe Gallagher that he was on the **** just two weeks before the Mitchell fight, a fight he was winning before he got caught and stopped. He was then outclassed and outmuscled by Brandon Rios in a fight no one excepted him to win, before having his license taken away by the board after failing a brain scan. He was then re-granted a license and came back with two blow out wins, before fighting Crolla. Again he was winning the Crolla fight but inactivity caught up with him and he got stopped. What I always wonder, if he had prepared properly for the Mitchell fight and had not had his peak years taken away from him, how far could he have gone?
John Murray imo should have picked up a world title, The fight with Brandon Rios took something out of John Murray and Joe Gallagher must take the blame when it comes to the downfall of John. Joe should have stopped the fight after 6 rounds imo and that would have saved John from taking needless punishment in a fight he was never going to win. His strength was always his size and against Brandon Rios he was the smaller fighter. Had John Murray got his chance against Ricky Burns then imo he would have beat Ricky and that comes from a Ricky Burns fan that has attended most of his fights since he turned professional but I think John would have got to Ricky and kept him against the ropes, Ricky was never a hard puncher and wouldnt have been able to hold John off. His gameplan for the Anthony Crolla fight was crazy, he should have picked his shots and broke Anthony's body up instead of using his tank up the way Barosso did on Saturday then I think he would have beat Anthony. I think he let his hatred towards Joe Gallagher get the better of him that night. To me he is in the same boat as Jamie Moore and Matt Macklin in guys that should've won a world title but never got there. It happens and I just hope he got something out of his career.
Good assessment but I think he needs to take a lot of the blame for the way he prepared for the Mitchell fight.
if i remember correctly didn't rios miss the weight for that fight? probably should have walked away from it in hindsight, maybe he needed the money i dunno. was a horrible beating. if ricky burns won a world title, then murray could have if things had worked out a little different
When John Murray was on the card you knew what fight you was getting, he was an all action fighter who wasn't scared to take a few shots to get one of his own off. Very much blood and guts with Murray as with Kevin Mitchell, sometimes the most entertaining fighters do not win world titles but still remain fan favourites for the effort they put in the ring. Murray and Mitchell are two of those fighters.
The Rios fight ruined Murray for me took a hell of a hiding which he didn't need to should of been pulled out early. He should of been instructed to go for broke see if he could pull off a shock if not was getting retired in the corner after 5 or 6. Guys I know the story behind this one Rios did miss weight again and for the fight to go ahead Murray got an extra $20k.Not for the first or last time with Rios. The Murray camp took the offer long training camp and expenses add up but must of known Rios would of had a massive advantage on the night. Rios was a shade under 147lb morning of the fight and Murray took 11 rounds of punishment the ref stopping a fight his corner should of done rounds before. He was never the same after that should of been protected by his management and corner.
Murray was the type of fighter who was always going to fade quickly. Good chin but god he got hit with everything. 0 head movement and didn't have much power either. I dont subsribe to him beating burns either. Ricky was a tidy boxer and john was pretty much a face first pressure fighter it would have been close but i think Ricky would have won it. The Rios fight was a joke they should have stopped it mid rounds he was never going to KO brandon with one shot and was just getting stomped
Was painful to watch as he got hit with everything as the above post said. I'm glad he didn't get hurt.
Some of you are over rating JM a bit here. He was a top quality british level fighter who was nearly always all actionand a joy to watch. But he was severly limited technically, especialy his head and foot movement. At euro level he was a quality contender who could hold his own against most fighters but not the best. At world level he was a remote chance fringe contender who would be expected to lose against any A level opponent. He lived up to his potential within 1-2%, he didnt have the natural talent to go much further. There is no shame in that, he had a great career and entertained all of us but not every fighter can be FMj.
Quality fighter. Loved watching Murray. Reckon would've beat Mitchell with better preparation, but Mitchell could probably say the same for Katsidis. Incidentally, there is a retirement do for John on 5th August in Manchester. Mitchell and Crolla both there. This content is protected Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
John Murray was a good British/European level fighter, him v Mitchell was a great fight but remember Mitchell was not world class and he lost to him. I think Mitchell is like Murray is in both had a really exciting style were great to watch and because of that sometimes its easy for us their fans to over egg how good they were or could have been. John Murray for all his qualities missed having a top boxing IQ that is how regardless of lifestyle i do not think he would have ever been a genuine world champion. I as anyone on here will know have always exposed Ricky Burns limitations but make no bones about it John Murray might have been better to watch than Ricky but would not have beat him in a month of Sundays.
moog for a man thats never stood in a boxing ring to say a top pro boxer has limitations is disgracful my man
john was an exciting fighter to watch, but lets be perfectly honest his lifestyle let him down and kevin, burns is a complete pro so you get what you deserve, to many fighters look for excuses be a man and except responsibility
How he is answering the question, he isnt calling anyone a bum or claiming to be able to knock them out himself.
