I agree, Gamboa's very strong for his weight. Anyone got that pic of him doing pullups with what looks like 45lb plates?
the fact that Khan handlers are keeping him away from guys that have just a little bit of power tells me something about his chin,,they just match him with very feather fisted subpar fighters, i think his management team is fully aware of his glass chin and they are trying to hide it as much as posible even in the fight with LImond a soft puncher they were trying to hide his chin, as soon as he steps up in class against a decent puncher he will get KTFO i dont think that khan gets to be contend for a tiltle before being KO a couple of times
The next opponent is Michael Gomez, a guy who could punch at 130 pretty decent, they'll play that off. But the thing is that he's shot and undersized, chinny himself, see the pattern here? No threats. At least Jimenez and Huerta type fringe contenders/gate keepers can take a punch, give you rounds and PUNCH a bit also, presenting a form of danger. Get the **** out of here people with trying to reason that Limond and St Clair were any kinds of tests what so ever for a 'serious' prospect who is HUGE for a LW.
people forget that jimenez was very defensive in that fight very much like what taylor did against pavlik the 2nd time, jimenez was very reluctant to open up mainly b/c he felt the power of gamboa during that 1rst rd and decided not to take any chances, he was basically throwing one punch at a time and covering up and ocasionally throwing some meaningless flurries,, im sure a gamboa with a couple of more fights under his belt will have KO jimenez 4 sure,, he just needed to throw more bodypunches so that he could open up jimenez and the rip him with some uppercuts down the middle.. i think if he would have cut his output just a little bit and concentrate on throwing more hard punches down the midle instead of throwing those 7-8 punch combinations he probably will have stop him allthose things he can work on with more experience no doubt, and it was clear to me that jimenez felt the POWER of GAMBOA b/c he was very reluctant to engage with him and sometimes is kind of hard to KO a guy that doesnt want to fight, also nobody points out that maybe the reason that Gamboa was droping his hands quite a bit was to invite jimenez to get out of his shell defense and exchange with him maybe gamboa was looking to land a boig counter and end the fight i think lenox mention that in the fight that he thought that gamboa was challenging jimeneze to throw at him so he could hit him back b/c it was pretty clear that gamboa didnt respect jimenez power at all
Many more questions will be answered, but he passed two crucial things for him, he showed good stamina and a good chin so far and against a very solid opponent who could crack a little. He definitely would have blown out Limond, St Clair is defensive, but presents no fire power or anything, would have just been shut out and likely taken by accumulation.
Gamboa's flaws can't be fixed by a trainer ... this guy has been fighting since he was a little kid ... 400 amateur fights and turning pro at the age of 26 ... there isn't much room for improvement. This guy has fought this way for the longest ... the toughest thing a trainer could do is change Gamboa. The best thing a trainer could do is to keep his hands up during training but during a fight is a different story. A leopard never changes its spots especially a 26 going on 27 yr old man.
Gamboa isn't a strong fighter ... he's an accumulation puncher ... his greatest asset is his ability to throw straight punches ... he also shoots his punches from underneath which is a big no no ... it makes him easier to get countered.
Hey don't forget about Davey Moore and David Reid ... this guy is getting rushed along very fast and its apparent that he's not all that good as a pro. Its very apparent just like Bojado and Juarez ... that he may not be able to get a title shot. Good amateur status doesn't always transition to good pro status. I think that his biggest asset is his ability to throw straight punches ... Him keeping his hands down can't be fixed by a trainer and no matter what people think ... this guy has bad habits and it will be hard for someone who isn't in the ring with him - to make him tighten up. ON the elite level - I don't see him being up there with the best jr LW's and LW's.
why dont everyone shut up! and see how he comes along in afew more fights! give the kid a chance!!! picking out little flaws and comparing him to other boxers!
