After a long & controversial history Rio could be the final chapter in Olympic boxing. In 2004 the IOC withheld more than $1m in tv revenue over alleged corruption & bribes at the Athens games. Egypt winning 3 medals despite mutiple protests was very suspicious. AIBA elected a new president & promised reform In 2008, during the Beijing Olympics AIBA vice-president president Rudel Obreja claimed that 60-70% of the judges & referees had been chosen by officials contrary to AIBA rules which required random selection by computer. In 2012 the IOC had to investigate AIBA again over allegations that Azerbaijan had paid $10m for 2 gold medals. There were at least a dozen terrible decisions at London & Azerbaijan ended up winning 2 bronzes. Going into Rio boxing has the worst out of competition testing of all the Olympic sports according to WADA. If this Olympics is full of dodgy decisions & failed drug tests then boxing is finished as an Olympic sport.
Very good chance if you ask me. They do have one up though... it's highly unlikely that we get many Bazillian medalists no matter how dodgy the decisions are, so that part should look a lot better as the last (London) Olympics.
Concussions and stoppages have been reduced since the headgear has gone, hence the reason in the first place to get rid of them. They also got rid of them because people who have never boxed thought the headgear made it a safe sport and watered down version of pro boxing. It's now a safer, more viewer friendly sport without the headgear.
I sure wouldn't want to even go to Rio. They ought to be more concerned about the millions of people living near open raw sewage than hosting an Olympics.
