So we have weight classes but you need height and size classes too do we?

Weight is the issue, weight classes are there for a reason, we see fights week in week out with fighters all different shapes and sizes but they fight because they fall in to the same weight class.

No it's not semantics, it's a fact, you can weigh anything between 154-160 to be classed as a middleweight, you don't have to be exactly the same weight, that's the bracket you have to be in.

Canelo fell in that bracket so he is a middleweight.

Exactly, Canelo is in the middleweight division, you could say he is one of the smaller middleweight in terms of height and reach but he is in that divison.

Nigel Benn was a small super middleweight, Mike Tyson was a small heavyweight, we can generate a long list of fighters who gave away advantages in their weight classes even though they fought in a certain divison.

It's a ridiculous argument, Canelo is a middleweight, you can't have it any other way.

If he moves back down then he will be a light middleweight but until then he is a middleweight.

It’s hard to say because it’s possible Canelo will have more power at 160 than he does have at 154/155. I think it’s pretty much a 50/50 fight, but given that GG has been fighting at 160 and Canelo hasn’t, if the fight’s at 160 naturaly GG will be a slight favorite but even then it’s still a toss up fight. No one knows what will happen, this is boxing. GG’s never been really tested and Canelo certainly possesses the skill, and has the power to test the chin of GG. Canelo also has a great chin so it’s going to be difficult for GG to stop Canelo. This is a great, great fight trying to undersell it like a mismatch is ridiculous.

If both guys agreed to weigh in at 157 I think it favors Canelo because GG will be slightly weakened. (much like Canelo vs Mayweather at 152, Canelo slightly weakened, enough for Floyd to escape with a MD) But I don’t think a 157 catcheweight is going to happen because I don’t think GG will agree to anything below 160. Which is understandable, but at the same time that will be a weight that Canelo has never fought at before.

Canelo has not only a hand speed advantage but he’s also a better technical boxer than GG. GG has a longer reach and is slightly bigger, so obviously there are inherent advantages for GG there.

GG’s never fought anyone like Canelo and there’s no way to know what will happen. Many think Canelo would be stronger at 160 than he is at 154/155, which is possible, but again is an unknown until we see him at the weigh-in. My guess is if they fight with no catchweight, Canelo may weigh-in at 158 or something which still may have him stronger than he was vs Khan at 155. In reality, vs LMW’s or WW Canelo is strong enough weighing in at 154 or 155 to get the job done. But to match GG’s power at 160, he should gain a few extra lbs to add some additional power and strength for a fight of that magnitude.

Are you sure about that? He looked like a corpse at 155.

Canelo hasn't fought at light middleweight since September 2013 when he fought Floyd.

Angulo and everything after that were above 154.

Right, and those fights he weighed 155 instead of 154 because there was no title to fight for (since Floyd had the titles and refused to give Canelo a rematch at LMW).

Canelo had no reason to weigh-in at 154 since no titles were on the line for those non-title fights vs Angulo and Kirkland. So he weighed in at 155. Making the 152 catchweight vs Floyd also made it harder for Canelo to make 154 after because making 152 was such a strain on his body.

Because Canelo is a middleweight and holds the lineal mw title and GGG deserves to fight for that

Well it depends how you define it. Technically weighing in at anything above 154.00000001 up to 160 is in the Middleweight division. So yes, technically he’s weighed in as a Middleweight for the last 3 years.

But, he was still seen as a Light Middleweight until he actually became MW champ by beating Cotto. Meaning, he was still ranked #1 in the Light Middleweight rankings during the time that he fought Angulo and Kirkland at 155. (so in terms of rankings, weighing in at 155 for those non-title fights didn’t make him ranked at MW instead of LMW)

You can say he’s been a Middleweight since he fought Floyd in 2013, but during that time he was really just a Light Middleweight who only weighed in 1 lb over the limit because there were no 154-lb title opportunities with Floyd being allowed to hold the 154-lb belts. Another thing to consider is that when he won the Middleweight title from Cotto, Cotto in that fight weighed in at 153.5. So technically, Canelo didnt even beat a Middleweight for the MW title.

He is the Lineal MW champ, though and we can agree it’s unusual. It’s been unusual since Cotto beat an injured Martinez. But I don’t think it’s accurate to say Canelo is a Middleweight when he’s never weighed in above 155 and hasn't fought any real Middleweights.
