I love Ali but he is so overrated as a boxer it's disgusting.

One of the most pathetic excuses is that Ali was somehow "out of his prime" because he had that 3 year break. Andre Ward had a similar break at similar age, so what?

Rip Joe Frazier. He didn't have the looks or charisma of Ali, but he was a good man and boy he could fight.

Muhammad Ali had 2 tune up fights, just like Ward will have before facing Kovalev after pretty much as long layoff as Ali.

Joe Frazier 29-0, Michael Spinks 31-0. Joe Frazier 5'11.5" 72", Michael Spinks 6'2.5" 76". Joe Frazier 212 lbs., Michael Spinks 214 lbs. Michael Spinks was as much a heavyweight as Frazier. He'd just come off beating Holmes and ****ey and was pound for pound when Tyson destroyed him in one round.

Also, Joe Louis knocked Max Schmeling down 3 times in the first round and finished him. Schmeling was the best in the world with victories over Sharkey, Uzcudun, Louis, and Stribling at the time. I think the victories and beat downs are comparable.

As far as Zab Judah fighting Kostya Tszyu, at the time Judah was undefeated 27-0 with 5 defenses of his title. And Tszyu bounced him off the floor, destroyed him in 2, and had him doing the funky chicken.

In the Dempsey vs Willard bout, Willard was down 7 times in 3 rounds, suffered broken ribs, a shattered jaw, a broken nose, four missing teeth, partial hearing loss, cuts and contusions. This was coming from a guy who was 6'1" against a guy who was 6'6.5" and coming off a victory over Jack Johnson. It was a savage mauling of a top heavyweight.

When Baer laid a beat down on Carnera, he did it with such savagery, ferocity, and glee that I got chills just watching it. Baer was actually snarling and pouncing on Carnera like an animal, just battering him around the ring. It was unsettling, shades of Mike Tyson vs Frazier or Bruno.

Now that I think of it, the most direct comparison to George Foreman's two fights with Joe Frazier would be Sonny Liston's two fights with Floyd Patterson.

That's just plain weird. He wasn't in as many exciting fights as Pacquiao, Gatti, Vazquez, Marquez, Rios, or Salido just in his era. He wasn't ever a pound for pound fighter like Pacquiao, Mayweather, Jones, Hopkins, De La Hoya, Barrera, or Morales. He doesn't have the mystique of the old guys like Marciano, Louis, Dempsey, Robinson, or Armstrong. He wasn't as intimidating and vicious as Tyson, Liston, or Duran. He wasn't the best of his division like say Hagler or Monzon. And on top of all that he cheated.

I can understand liking the guy but to make him your favorite is ridiculous. He wouldn't be top 20 for me of this era. If you like brash talking scumbags Ricardo Mayorga was more colorful and a full blown ****** just like Tyson. If you are into cheaters, Mayweather got away with it. If you like volume punching, James Toney landed 400 punches in 4 title fights, meaning he threw more than 1000 in each of them. Gatti, Ward, Basilio, Ali, Marciano, Dempsey, Tunney, Louis, and Zale were in multiple fight of the years. Bobby Chacon, Danny Lopez, Ray Mancini, Matthew Saad Muhammad, and Johnny Saxton were highlight reel fighters. Duran and Walker climbed more weight classes than anyone. Joe Louis ruled a division the longest. Jimmy Wilde has the most fights without a loss. Willie Pep, Pernell Whitaker, and Niccolino Locche were almost impossible to hit. Earnie Shavers hit the hardest. Archie Moore has the most knockouts.

I can't think of anything Margarito did that somebody didn't do better.

Obviously a post with a ridiculous agenda. Frazier won but he took a hell of a beating in the process. Won easily, I guess thats why the man nearly died post fight lol. some of these threads... :patsch

Fighters age differently. We don't really know yet what effect Ward's layoff has had on him.

As for Ali, you can tell he wasn't as good just by looking at him. His hands and feet were slower and he wasn't able to fight in his preferred style, dancing around the ring and keeping his opponent at the end of his jab, for 15 rounds. He held his feet a lot more after his comeback.
