Just so long as he gets his confidence back and stop[s dreaming of a rematch with JC. Whatever the reasons he gives for him losing, the fact is, he called for his shot, he got it and didn't take it. He's only himself to blame. Hope he gets a big fight soon against Taylor or Miranda.

Both are great fighters. Calz. is just a bit better and showed it by adapting. Their fight was my favorite of last years big fights. Hope Kessler gets back in the ring soon and with confidence, he seems like losing to Calz, has really messed with his head. Calz. tends to do that to opponents.

You could be right, of course. Calzaghe might have learned more from the first fight and potentially win a rematch by an even greater margin. Here is why I don't think so. Looking on Calzaghe's complete body of work the Kessler fight is his most disciplined fight of them all IMO. Calzaghe was simply really really good on the night in Cardiff. Kessler was good too but did not reach his absolute best level, and here I'm talking about a level disregarding what his opponent presented him with. For example, Kess could not anticipate Calzaghe's patterns of movement in order to put himself in a position to fire his best KO punch. He landed several bombs but no one where he gets his whole body behind it. In short I think Calzaghe would have problems reaching the level he reached in the first fight and on top of that he would probably (in all fairness) have to face the danish fans in the Parken Stadium. The latter is NOT funny I can assure you. It's hard to imagine Kess running out of gas the way he did in Cardiff with 25.000 fans pushing him. I'd like to hear how folks think Calzaghe can improve his performance from Cardiff.

Kessler would lose every fight if they fought every fortnight until they are sixty. Just accept he isn't in the same leauge as Calzaghe.

for me and kessler admitted calzaghe took his shots and walked right threw them. He hit calzaghe with a murderous uppercuts but his face when calzaghe didn't move i feel dimished his confidence and he ran out of ideas.
Normal fighters would of been stunned and when he saw it wasn't working on calz he just had to admit its going to be hard night.

to be fair i think calzaghe vs kessler fight for me showed to me, the difference in a GREAT/SUPER fighter (calz) and a GOOD fighter who would beat all others except the Greats in the weight class.
Joe just had the fight under control once he figured kessler out

A harsh post. However, it contains plenty of truth, much to the nuthugger's chagrin.

When a boxer loses a fight and says he didnt have a plan b or didnt do this or that its usually because the other guy didnt let him.
Kessler having a plan b, c, d, e and f might not have gotten him through the fight as the winner. If Kessler changes plan Joe would change his plan, overall Joe is a more adaptable fighter. I dont know about round 12? Calzaghe stupidly went into tear up macho mode as usual.

    Thanks for the translation, Holger.

It's quite normal that Kessler is hindsighting, but given the fact that he had waited for Calzaghe for 3 years, and since it was his most important fight, I find it inexcusable that he didn't have alternate plans.

Calzaghe had a good fight, and had done more preparations, while Kessler except in a few rounds fought bewildered and no where near his normal self.

It is good he has put the fight behind him and starts looking forward, but it doesn't help him much in what he should have done, but he should look into what he will be doing when someone alters tactics, as most elite fighters will do. He should have known that Calzaghe fights in different ways, as he has done most of his career depending on his opponents.

Therefore, Kessler should add more facets into his boxing - not just for Calzaghe, but for any given fighter in the future.

Was I disappointed at the loss? No, not really. Was I disappointed by the way Kessler fought? Yes, very much so. He fought like a man who had only 15-20 fights under him.

    Great post.

The thing I was most shocked about was the meltdown in the corner by his team.

They had no advice for the guy, they weren’t using the tools to stop his face swelling, nothing constructive and had a very big sense of panic, like they weren’t expecting Calzaghe to be any challenge.

I think it’s a huge credit to Kessler that he didn’t give up in the fight and kept going out trying to find pathways to victory but you have to admit, Calzaghe just had too much style and adaptability to be beaten by Kessler at their respective points in career.
