No, Gonzalez would still be p4p #1. His resume is just too stacked: Niida, Takayama, Estrada, Rodriguez Jr., Yaegashi, Sosa, Viloria, and Arroyo. Plus, if he moves up and beats Cuadras as well, it's over. He'd be way too difficult to surpass until he loses. Ward would probably have more of an argument if he beats Kovalev and Stevenson. He'd be a two division lineal champion. Just my two cents, though.
If Ward can pull this off, he has undoubtedly taken over as the p4p #1. However, if Kovalev merely eeks out a decision, Im not so sure he gets that lofty distinction. But I personally wouldnt have anybody, RG or GGG in front of him. It would take Pac beating Mayweather in a rematch, and by KO to dethrone Ward or Kovalev from the high seat in my opinion.
If Gonzalez hasn't been defeated by then, not sure how. Roman will still have a greater resume than Kovalev and even if Ward is more debatable there, he still has only beaten one fringe contender in the last 2+ years. I'm surprised so many seem to be answering yes. Many of these posters have discredited wins entirely when one fighter is moving up in weight with minimal accomplishments in the new division they compete.
Easy, people barely watch the lower weights. Gonzalez's resume is pretty insane, though. Dude has wins over guys that are still currently contenders.
Well, I highly doubt Ward could squeeze down to 112 pounds, so not sure how relevant that argument is...
