So what you are basically saying is that the word thug is a racist term according to your ultra pc paranoid mind.

Even though the word thug has been used for decades to describe criminals from all races, you want to make out it is a racial slur soley towards the black man.

Well not that easy to take someone like Kova's power away seeming it's power based on speed, precision and accumulation...

On top of that, Kovalev doesn't break down when he doesn't get the KO he can very easily box without frustration hence the Hopkins fight.

 

I agree for the most part. I wouldn't necessarily say his power is "based on speed, precision and accumulation." More like his power is based on...well...power. He is extremely heavy handed. However, he delivers his power using a combination of speed, precision, power, and good timing. And he can be patient and box...as you said. That's the puzzle Ward will need to solve. And it is a rather difficult one...no room for mistakes.

Ward isn't a 50 year old though. I'm not sure a prime or near prime Hopkins, would have folded like that either. It would have been a very different fight. I think Ward has what it takes to do what Hopkins was basically too old to do. But, this is why they fight...so we can see. So, we shall see.

Ward has fought some good guys. But, Kovalev would be the best of them...for sure. So, it is a step up fight for both of them.

The guy is OBVIOUSLY a family man. He is not out flashing his money, seen in strip clubs, associated with gang activity, bar room brawls etc. I live in the Bay and get around. I have never seen the guy. He is VERY low key. He doesn't appear to smoke, drink, or even eat fast food. He is a standout amateur, brought home the gold for his country (one of the few to do it, in quite sometime). He is an uber talented fighter, excellent commentator and boxing ****yst.

But, in the ring, when that bell sounds, he is nothing nice. And he is what he has to be, when you are putting your life at risk. Does he fight dirty? Sometimes. But, he can box his a$$ off too. He can outmuscle a lot of guys. And he is clever in there. He is a winner...period.

Does he play when it comes to his business? Obviously not. He wasn't happy with his contract. So, he tried to get out of it. Big deal. Did he kill Goosen (R.I.P.) to do it? No. He tried to go through the court system. And he basically lost the case. He was later bought out of his contract. It is his career and his busines. At the end of the day, he put his livelihood at risk and it paid off in the end. Some may not agree with it. But, it was his decision to make.

But, a THUG Andre Ward is not. He is not about that life, as the saying goes. So, either you mean he is a "thug" in that squared circle (not entirely untrue) or you mean it as a racial epithet (not cool). As the other poster told you, THUG is used by the dominant culture these days, to generally describe black males (adult and child) who appear threatening to some people.

I agree that sociopathic criminals of all types, may better fit this label. It has even become a fad to embrace it...sadly. But, it is not at all befitting of someone with Andre Ward's background.

prob because ward went through a tough stretch of fights against good to decent competition while bute played around with bums waiting to take on a winner of a grueling tourney.......and ward didn't need butes belt to be known as the kingpin of 168...he was already known as that without it.....

he didn't duck bute...and bute has been exposed as nothing special that would have ever given ward, especially an active one, any problems......u saw an inactive, rusty, ward handle barrera with ease......a sharp ward would have shutout bute and maybe even stopped him

In the US the word thug has certain connotations that it doesn't have elsewhere. It is a loaded term Stateside.

Anyway... It doesn't matter how you slice it, Andre Ward isn't a 'thug' no matter what your interpretation of the word is.

 

With what Ward's been giving out (he looks good, excellent for the layoff) it's the only outcome I can see. I can see Ward beating Stevenson and Beterbiev (as long as he stays on the outside), I see Ward dominating everyone else at LHW, but not Kovalev.

I don't know about that. It's an urban slang thing that has become a pejorative term. A bit like chav really. Travellers originally used the term to refer to their children but nowadays it means something quite different.

Anyway, Andre Ward isn't a felon either to my knowledge.

 

This is identical to the pre Hopkins fight rhetoric. They have simply replaced his name with Ward.
