All kidding aside, I think the poster makes a valid point. Yes life is imitating art and let's not forget life as it was in 1985. Holmes famoulsy said "there will never be another a white champion as long as black fighters are fighting the way they are".................Holmes has since said that by white fighters he meant the "Gentlemen Gerry" middle class American white fighter who lacked the hunger that propelled him from poverty. Fact is that the likes of Golota, Klitschkos, Schulz, Valuev, Maskaev all knew more poverty growing up than the likes of the boxing banker Calvin Brock!

The Rocky story though was a rather cliched attempt at showing the folly of the cold war rather than a serious prediction of the Eastern European invasion of the heavyweight division. The fact that there are now Eastern European champions is coincidental.

Come on - Tommy 'The Gunn' Morrison was party to the worst Rocky. Rocky IV is fun. Rocky V is by FAR the worst!

    Rocky I
    Rocky 6
    Rocky 3
    Rocky 2
    Rocky 5
    Rocky 4

Theres not much in between 3 and 2, they could be swapped around but 4 was just a 90 minute MTV music video of the boxers training. Awful film.

    For me,

    Rocky I
    Rocky III
    Rocky II
Rocky IV(the patriotic end ruined the film though, "if you can change, and I can change, then everyone can change" - that was just moronic, and unrealistic.)
    Rocky V.

In regards to the prophecy of russian and ex-soviet nations dominating the HMW is not valid. Russians weren't allowed to pro box, and therefore it is hard to compete, no?

All we need is Cuba to allow their boxers to compete at pro level, and the US boxers to have a new breed of good fighters, and things will be more diverse.

Why would a middle class person, either black or white choose a career as hard as boxing?

Middle class people are by nature financially and socially secure

it's interesting about the larry holmes quote, and the whole white and black thing.

these russian speaking fighters are ofcourse white and it's odd that i have found that these guys came around, there are quite a few people saying "ohh there are no good heavyweights" unlike say 15 years ago when almost all the top guys were black.

having said i do think the heavyweights back then were better but alot of these guys are good too.

as far as the movie goes, i think it was a great movie and feed into so many sterotypes.

the other thing is that i group all these fighters under group "russian speaking"

because all of them learned the soviet school of boxing
during the soviet times most of their parents and grand parents mixed with people from other republics.(this also often happened before soviet times too)

and even before then the first capical of russia was kiev, which shows how related all these people are.

and ofcourse they all speak russian

having said all that...i always wondering who would win...

    ivan drago or clubbler lang?

It was unrealistic as anything, but I was thoroughly entertained by Rocky IV. Perhaps even moreso than 3.

1, 2 and 6 would be the better films, but for me, not neccessarily the more entertaining.

Tommy Gunn was like a Tyson. Balboa takes him in from the streets and trains. Gunn gets involved with a Don Kingesque promoter and ruins himself. I think they took one of D'Amato's lines and had the angel of Mickey say it.
