Would Ali be too small for today's heavyweight division?

As I said before, Ali had trouble with good boxers, most of which would be too small to rate highly today

He was nearly outboxed by Doug Jones. He lost 2-1 to Norton in the trilogy. He was down on points to Ron Lyle, might have lost to Jimmy Young. The AP says Young won.

As a boxer, Ali was pretty much jab and cross only. He could not in-fight, didn't go to the body, and had a clunky and seldom used left hook.

His defensive stance was unorthodox and open to hooks.

Ali shined with superior speed, a top chin, toughness, a very fast jab, and solid right hand. In his second act, he became a good counterpunching and clinching.

But today if you're the smaller man with less power, you better bring a lot to the table to beat a larger super heavyweight with skill such as Lewis or the Klitschko's. And no Foreman was not a super heavyweight with skills. He was more of a puncher with a small gas tank in the 1970's.

Holmes, in my opinion, had better skills than Ali.

 

George Foreman, who was friends with Ali said Wladimir is the best ever.

 

You would fare poorly in every way, other than age (and probably weight, I guess).

 

Good breakdown. I still think he his incredible foot & hand speed, and his top chin would be enough to favor him over any of today's heavies (given the fact that he had decent size himself), but I wouldn't be surprised if he failed to run the table (especially if we're including Lewis-Vitali-Wlad)

 

Foreman is Foreman.

I've read a recent article in which he talked about how Klitschko had a bad chin, was boring and won't be remembered. He said Lewis was the best ever when he beat Tyson and I'm sure he said the same a million times about Ali.

I'd take his opinion with a grain of salt.

Nevertheless, it doesn't change the fact that Klitschko is criminally underrated by armchair blowhards like Perry who don't know the first thing about quality boxing.

 

Yes. But Foreman was good friends with Ali. To call someone else greater to me shows he's being honest...at least in his mind.

I actually think Foreman was of the " winners " of the great 70's fighter.

Most of these guys are dead, had multiple wives, or got out of the game damaged.

Foreman changed his sullen ways, is honest about his past, and in some ways is a motivational type of person.

 

Foreman learned how to be a good con man and salesman. I'm not so sure that he's changed all that much from his earlier incarnation. He's just learned how to act like a lovable good guy while putting the brakes on some of his other, not-so-friendly tendencies.

 

60 plus fights . How many of them did he destroy with this left hook?

It took him till fight 63 before people took notice of his left hook. And in that fight he had a gut who made a mummy look quick in front of him.

If Wlad can't land a left hook or glove for that matter on David Haye , he isn't landing diddly on Ali. Its really that simple.

 

Sanders threw the kitchen sink into glass chinned Rahman and didn't score any savage KO.

He touched Wlad and he went. His chin his worse than Tommy Morrison's.

His whole 'fighting' style was constructed around protecting his glass chin

When Williamson was whooping Wlads ass , Manny had to reassure him he was no Ali in the corner, since Sleeps basic circular movement was giving him absolute fits. That advice wasn't good enough, they had to throw the towel in after only 4 rounds.

That same style would shut Wlad completely out AGAIN when he fought Fury.

Actually its only casuals with an untrained eye and people with particular agendas that rate K2 as ATG boxers.
Wlad faults out weight his cons. This is beyond evident to anybody who knows what they're looking at.

 

Tommy Morrison is a better natural boxer and fighter than Wlad is and its not even close.

Wlad is like a Formula 1 driver. He's nothing without his multi million pound team around him.

Tommy had no team , just a poor attitude and a wayward life style. In Wlads shoes with his state of mind , he would have been unstoppable.
As he was , he still got a win far better than anybody Wlad ever beat.
Wlad was nothing but a business man. A manufactured fraud.

No fighter gets wrecked as Wlad did three times in comical fashion and then walks into a ring with the very best Ali and does well. It would be a massacre. Wlad has no ability to stop the punches coming his way that were quicker than what SRR could throw. Wlads face bright red after round one. Cut after round three. Eyes swollen and closing by round seven. Timber by round nine.
