Boxer does not ALWAYS beat the puncher .

Liston slaughtered every style of fighter until he ran into Ali .

A lot of pure boxers in history have met their demise time and time again when they got put in with a massive puncher .

Styles make fights. Boxers beat punchers.

When considering two fighters at a comparative level, boxers beat punchers and I'd suggest anyone who has ever been in the ring knows it.

Power is a great tool but seems to be really overrated on this forum. It doesn't actually mean that much at the elite level. Everyone punches hard at that level - it's just a matter of how hard. It's like a baseball pitch - a fastball doesn't really blow that many people away in MLB? Because every pitch is fast at that level and good hitters make a living out of hitting fast pitches just like good boxers make a living by being difficult to punch in the head.

There are hundreds of examples where boxers have lost to punchers which shows the variance which occurs when all other factors are not equal - like if the boxer is not physically conditioned to fight 12 hard rounds he will get stopped.

Contingent on relative parity across other characteristics, the boxing wins.

How has nobody mentioned the best example of a boxer beating a puncher, Hopkins-Trinidad?

 

Not always. It depends on the style. There are different types of styles...boxer, boxer-puncher/stalker, pressure fighter/swarmer. I'd say that the biggest weakness for a boxer is a pressure fighter/swarmer. Boxers can handle boxer-punchers in most instances, but the pressure fighter is usually their weakness.

I had Mayweather losing both fights. Both apply incredibly amounts of pressure and took the boxer outside of his comfort zone. other instances include:

Broner/Maidana
Imam/Granados
Ali/Fraizer
Chavez/Taylor
Leonard/Duran
Mayorga/Forrest
Lomachenko/Salido - Even thought I felt like Lomachenko got robbed.

But a boxer will handle a boxer-puncher. Those instances include:

Mayweather/Pacquiao - when Pac was no longer a pressure fighter.
Rigo/Donaire
Lomachenko/Russel Jr.
Hopkins/Trinidad

However, a boxer-puncher is able to match up with better against a pressure fighter than a boxer in most instances. Those include:

Trinidad/Mayorga
Mosley/Margarito
DLH/Mayorga

This doesn't always work because there are so many variables. That's why fighters fight and fights need to get made. What works on paper doesn't always work in the fight.

I think Ward/Kovalev is probably one of the reason why this fight was made. Kovalev is an interesting fighter...he's a boxer, a puncher, boxer-puncher, pressure fighter and occasional swarmer vs Ward, who is a pure boxer.

True. But he's clearly not a boxer and clearly not a pressure fighter. Although he has at times shown he can take on multiple styles.

He's not Ray Leonard or Marco Antonio Barrera though he could basically morph into any style at will.

Everything he does starts with the power. If he cannot land a hard shot he's screwed in this fight. He MUST rock Ward or he will lose badly.
