Holmes vs Norton - What Gene Tunney said!

I wrote him off after his loss to Sanders, and boy was I wrong. Doesn't change the fact that Tunney was a complete jerk though.

 

OK so he was a complete jerk.

That aside, I find people’s reactions to this sort of thing vaguely comical.

They treat it as if you had said exactly the same thing today!

 

Tunney was one of the smartest men ever to hold the title and he could talk about boxing on a high level. But he was also biased at times.

Obviously, this comment is worthless.

 

Does it play in as a certain factor that the the guy who said this never fought a black fighter and the guy he said it about never met a black fighter after the second year of his career... and this was in reference to two black fighters?

 

Well, Norton's career was all but done when Tunney made that comment, it's not like he became better with hindsight.

But I don't think its anything to be upset about. Tunney was over 80 years old and an ******* to begin with. He made a silly comment to bolster himself, but that was all it was, a comment. People say silly things all time. All I said is that it's nothing to take serious.

 

Pretty hard on Tunney here. I guess he doesnt get a pass here like Ali who was one of the most blatant racists ive ever heard. And who talked **** on every HW befor him except for Jack Johnson.

 

Ali was a flawed character and said some despicable things, but he grew into a kind and generous man who did a lot of good. Also, the oppressed people's hatred against their oppressors is easier to forgive than when it's the other way around.

 

Ali shouldn't get a pass for being racist. He's equally worthy of contempt on that score as Tunney.

He should get more of a pass than Tunney for talking **** about HWs before him though. Because he was such a great heavyweight and fought everyone.

 

Are you from America? Because you sound like you simply don't get American race relations from 1960 on.

Did you know that Ali was banned from going to certain local businesses like hamburger joints, because of the color of his skin? Did you know that the US Government allowed this discrimination to happen, and in many instances encouraged it?

Come down to the south side of Chicago, and I'll show you what the effects of redlining are.

Ali has met thousands upon thousand of people from every nation from every corner of the world. Ask those people what they think of Ali.

Stop being so defensive of Ali's racism.

 

You equated it to white supremecy. Don't be ignorant and paint Ali in a certain light that he isn't.

"The revolution will not be televised" Means two different things depending on who is saying it. If you're not privy to the unique cultural characteristics of American race relations in the past 60 years, you will sound dumb commenting on it. Like most people would sound dumb, commenting boldly on subjects they have little to no knowledge about. It's very obvious to those who know.

Ali did a lot for white people, black people, and all colors of people. There was no discrimination when it came to the hearts he touched. And most people know that, which is why he is a celebrated global icon in the west, and the east.

 

I abhor the views Ali expressed about mixed-marriages and the way he talked about mixed-race offspring of such unions. I find that offensive, unscientific, damaging and severely incorrect on several levels.
Whether it's black people or white people or any other colour of people holding those views, the sooner they are banished from human thinking the better.

If you have a problem with that, so be it.

 

I agree. And even though it came from non malicious intentions, those are no ideals fit for a sophisticated society. And like a real man, he disparaged those views when it became apparent that those ideals didn't produce the results of making peoples lives better or happier.

But when you say hes equally worthy of contempt as Tunney, you don't know what you're talking about.

 

He's equally worthy of contempt on the score of racism as Tunney is.

That doesn't mean I hold black racist bigotry to be on a historical par with White Supremacy.
