Joe Gallagher - asset or liability to Liam Smith against Canelo?

I think he will cost him the fight. Joe is great at getting his fighters in incredible shape and making sure they've got the best engine possible. But against top level opposition they don't have the necessary head movement and subtlety to their game and can seem a bit one dimensional. We've seen it with a few of his fighters when they fight at that level. I hope I'm wrong, I'd love Smith to get the win.

 

I think Joe Gallagher will end up costing Liam Smith against Canelo; when the crunch comes, Gallagher seems unable to read the way a fight is progressing, and thus, advise his fighter as to how to adjust his tactical and technical approach to counteract the opponent and press for the win.

As has already been mentioned by the earlier response to this thread, Gallagher's fighters, by and large, lack the head movement and technical nuances to really make the difference at true world level.

I too would like Smith to win, and I'm sure he'll give his all; but I just think Canelo has too much technical ability, and too much seasoning at this level, for Smith to overcome. I can envisage a convincing Canelo points victory (maybe an 8-4 or a 9-3 type of fight to Canelo) -- or maybe even a late TKO stoppage win (mid 11th to mid 12th) for Canelo.

 

Perhaps Gallagher might have the help of somebody intelligent in the corner like Scott Quigg, or failing that he can ask the TV commentators how the fight is going.

 

Smith's limitations will cost him the fight, he'll give his all but I think Canelo is a couple of levels above him and stop him late.

Gallagher is an excellent trainer, he likes the sound of his own voice no doubt but he is a trainer of multiple champions at various levels.

 

People are paying too much attention to the Frampton fight. Gallagher might have got it slightly wrong on the night but even then it was a razor thin decision to Frampton, a P4P top 10 fighter. Joe G is a world class trainer, look at his stable.

 

Razor thin!? It was by three or four rounds, a clear win.

 

Gallagher fighters are all one dimensional, high guard, no lateral movement, no effective head movements, just walk you down and try and wear you down. Gallagher focuses on engine and fitness as noted above, his fighters tend to wear you down with there body shots, it will work at European level but once they get to world level against guys with real skills and engines, I expect them to be out boxed. This goes for Liam, Callum, Stephen Smith, Crolla and Quigg. Crolla and Callum have the best chance of proving me wrong.

That's putting it mildly.

Most people who watched the fight -- either live or on PPV -- were utterly baffled that it took Quigg so long to get going. Frampton did nothing utterly exceptional in order to win the rounds in the first half of the fight, but was banking those rounds mainly due to Quigg's lack of urgency and negligible punch output. Gallagher, as Quigg's trainer, should have read the pattern of the first three or four rounds, told Quigg he was falling behind on this occasion, told Quigg what he had to do in order to adapt, and instilled a sense of urgency into Quigg.

 

yes there that bad there's 2 world champ several world challengers and british champions, what a total sprat you are made, any trainer in the country would be proud as to what Joe and his fighters have achieved if it were them.
You speak about european level as if its easy to reach, it isnt honestly!

None his fighters beat anyone ranked in the top 10 on boxrec. Crollas win over barroso for me was the closest thing to a world level win and barroso was an unknown quantity. So before you discredit my arguments at least do some research.

I did not say Gallagher is a bad coach, nor did I say he's fighters were, I'm pointing out what I see will be the limitation of his fighters at the top level because they have a lot of similarities between them. The biggest flaw being their one style of defence and there biggest advantage being there fitness.

 

He was telling Quigg how well he was boxing and then at the end of the 8th told him TV had him 6-1 down. Is that getting it only "slightly wrong"?
