What makes GGG such a GREAT heavy puncher is that he puts an insane amount of body weight + torque behind his punches (hooks especially) without lunging in or over extending... One attack after another with perfect distance (not too close to be smothered or too far to over extend). That's an extremely disciplined way of fighting especially when he is under fire. I've only seen this before with Tszyu. His wrist barely moves upon impact suggesting that the entire force is directed through the punch. Only a well exercised forearm can handle this pressure. Please note that this is a boxing thread on technique and not on GGG's opponents.
his balance is also superb, he's always in position to throw a punch, even if he's momentarily lost his footing or distance, making his opponents wary of throwing punches
Usually I'd have to agree with you Kavlas on the "without lunging" but last night in the Brook fight he was lunging , maybe it was because he did not respect Brooks power but lunging he was & that made him look, uncharacteristically sloppy...
True on last nights performance. While back pedaling, Brook was also pulling back his upper torso brilliantly making it hard to land even when the foot distance between them was within punching range. That says a lot about Brooks masterful technique aswell. Amazing stuff!
Indeed one of the best balances in the game and while making it occasionally look as if he's flat footed in reality though he's superbly anchored.
Also he doesnt move his head. At all. Your head is heavy, and its located at the top of your body (just in case anybody didnt know that!)- the end of the lever so to speak. . If you are moving it - you are imposing a load on your body and interfering with your balance. Normally zero head movement would be a major FLAW in a boxer, but the granite-headed GGG trades off the -(for him) minimal cost of his opponent landing a shot on his granite head, against the (for him) major benefit of being permanently 100% in position to unload his own bombs. Hence the Geale ko.
Golovkin was affected by illness, jet lag, drained or something else last night........ wasn't himself
I think he also punches with his knuckles that makes a punch stronger and even painful. Basically putting all that energy into small area. That would explain why other fighters are a bit afraid of his punches and why he breaks things (eye sockets, ribs etc). His punching technique is really terrific.
He has power but he couldn't drop a WW... Pavlik dropped every fighter he's damn near really fought minus hopkins. That's power. Now imagine Pavlik fighting Berto. Same thing right?
Brook couldn't even make it 5 rounds. His corner threw in the towel so that Brook did not die, did not leave on a stretcher or did not need to spend a week sipping out of a straw.
