It would be like if Gomez avoided his number 1 contender for 7 years and the man achieved 16 consecutive kos.

Golovkin is a great fighter, but it's hard comparing his stats historically because of how meaningless they are.

The way it's counted defending another title counts as well, even if you don't see the IBO as legit. He still has defended the WBC and IBF ones so it was a legit 17th defense

 

Depends if you count the regular title he held at the same time as Sturm's Super WBA title as genuinely being a world title, I mean how can there be 2 world champions for the same organisation? The regular title to me is basically an intercontinental title, it isn't a real world title no matter what the label, at best he was interim champion for me.

Sure Sturm was ducking him like so many others have and Golvkin did beat Geale who beat Sturm and so he beat the man that beat the man so you could say it legitimatizes his previous regular title defences. Geale was also stripped of the Super title after he beat Sturm for ducking his mandatory Golovkin, so I personally see his genuine world title run starting from then. So I'd have Golovkin's title run at 12 defences.

 

I can go along with that logic bomber. If you don't count IBO and don't count WBA regular, no matter what the circumstances, he's only at 12. And if you only count lineal, he's not even a champion.
But that would make it almost impossible to break defense records nowadays.

 

How is it 17 when he only won the proper WBA belt 7 fights ago against Geale? Brook wasn't counted , so i'm counting 5.

I don't count anything but lineal/linear, personally, but in a chase for trinket defenses, this is largely how GGG's reign should be seen. From 2013 on, GGG was the "Super" titleholder and that's the only "world championship" worth noting (even that is a big stretch). Therefore he has 11 WBA defenses, but 12 total title defenses. That makes his title knockout streak the same. It's all largely worthless if he doesn't become "the man", however.

 

Yup I wouldn't count GGG's WBA title as legit until Geale vacated. So his first legit title fight was Rosado IMO

 

Hopkins was the IBF champ in 96 his 1st defense was Steve Frank, his last was Taylor
